The Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database is an analytical tool established by Clarivate Analytics (formerly the Intellectual Property & Science division of Thomson Reuters) based on the compilation and analysis of scholarly literature included in the Web of Science Core Collection (SCIE/SSCI) and the references cited therein.

This indicator enables systematic and targeted analysis of international scientific literature, providing insights into the development and influence of top scientists, research institutions, countries and regions, and academic journals within specific disciplinary fields. Furthermore, it serves as a foundational resource for identifying data crucial to informing decision analysis.

Covering 22 disciplinary fields, the database employs six key metrics: Number Of Papers, Total Citations, Citations Per Paper, Highly Cited Papers, Hot Papers, and Frontier Papers” to comprehensively evaluate the scientific research level of countries and regions, the academic reputation of institutions, the citation impact of scientists, and the scholarly standing of journals from multiple perspectives. With a cycle of ten years, ESI calculates and compares the SCI and SSCI publications and their citation performance of universities and research institutions worldwide. Disciplines whose total citation count ranks within the top 1% are included in the ESI discipline ranking and then generating a ranking of the world’s top 1% universities and research institutions.
