The City University of Macau Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) is a dynamic academic unit characterized by distinct disciplinary strengths and prominent development advantages, with an equal emphasis on teaching, research, and application-oriented development. Guided by the philosophy of “Humanistic Self-Cultivation and Social Commitment”(人文日新,經緯社會), the Faculty is dedicated to cultivating versatile professionals with interdisciplinary expertise in the humanities and social sciences, through providing students with more diverse platforms, broader perspectives, and richer opportunities, in a bid to promote humanities and social sciences research and its application-oriented development in Macao and the Greater Bay Area. Recently, the Faculty has achieved remarkable results in academic research, faculty and students competitions, and international exchanges. FHSS Doctoral and master's degree programmes are now open for applications, inviting students from home and abroad to embark on a journey of deep humanistic inquiry.

學科佈局前瞻,課程體系完善

As a Faculty that equally prioritizes teaching and research, FHSS houses the General Education Department (GED), the Applied Linguistics Research Center, and other teaching and research units. It offers degree programs in Applied Linguistics, Cultural Industries, English Studies, and Portuguese Studies, alongside general education courses designed to enhance students' comprehensive qualities. Notably, its Applied Linguistics program, spanning BA, MA, and PhD levels, is the first of its kind in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao to offer a complete academic pathway.

This academic year, the Faculty launched a new master's program in the studies of Chinese Culture. Adopting a global perspective, focusing on East-West cultural exchange through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the studies of history, philosophy, and intellectual history, it aims to cultivate cultural studies talents with an international outlook by both inheriting traditional humanistic spirit and emphasizing innovative research methodologies, thereby contributing to the contemporary development of Chinese culture.

學術研究深耕,創新成果頻現

FHSS is deeply committed to academic research, undertaking numerous projects funded by local institutions such as the Macao Foundation, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao SAR Government, and the Education Fund. The Faculty's sustained output of innovative achievements, deep interdisciplinary expertise, and accolades at major academic events underscore its academic strength and innovative vitality. A paper was also honored as the Excellent Paper at the 2025 Young and Mid-Career Scholars Symposium on Cultural Tourism Economy.

The Faculty organizes diverse academic and cultural exchange activities in areas such as Cultural Industries Research, Intercultural Communication, Digital Cultural Industries, Applied Linguistics, Cultural and Creative Productions, and New Business Models and Management Innovation. It has hosted a series of high-level academic lectures featuring experts and scholars from prestigious institutions including Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Macao Polytechnic University. These lectures, delivered through a hybrid online-offline format, delve into hot topics such as Artificial Intelligence and Language Learning, the behavioral mechanisms of Large Language Models (LLMs), and innovative applications of eye-tracking technology. They not only highlight the academic value of interdisciplinary research but also foster international academic dialogue and talent cultivation through a multi-level exchange model of “expert guidance—youth innovation—postgraduate growth”.
