CityU international faculty visit Beijing to deepen understanding of national affairs and foster China-west exchange

To actively support China’s “15th Five-Year Plan” , contribute to Macao’s development as a hub for high-caliber international talent, and align with the Macao SAR Government’s strategic positioning, City University of Macau (CityU) is accelerating the recruitment of global talent and actively encouraging them to gain a comprehensive understanding of China’s national affairs, history, culture and latest developments, thereby deepening exchanges between Chinese and Western civilizations. In this context, the University recently delegated two international academic staff members to participate in a National Studies Course organized by the Macao SAR Government Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ). The program featured a five-day study and field visit in Beijing, where the two participants engaged in thematic seminars, corporate visits and cultural activities, further enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the country’s higher education development, scientific and technological innovation, and cultural heritage.

At the graduation ceremony of the course, Professor Markus Leibrecht from the Faculty of Finance, an Austrian scholar representing CityU, was invited to deliver a speech on behalf of the participants. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the DSEDJ for organizing the course, noting that the overall schedule was well planned and smooth, with rich academic content and meaningful cultural components. He remarked that the course effectively combined academic depth, cultural immersion, and professional exchange. Looking ahead, he plans to integrate the insights gained into his teaching, guiding students to develop interdisciplinary and critical thinking skills and to better prepare them for the emerging landscape of the labor market.

Another CityU representative, Dr Sara Augusto, a Portuguese Assistant Professor from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, shared that the experience not only strengthened her sense of institutional belonging and commitment, but also enhanced her understanding of the policies and the development of higher education in China. She added that the series of inspiring thematic talks, corporate visits and cultural activities, conducted in an open and engaging learning atmosphere, provided meaningful inspiration for her academic and professional practice.

City University of Macau has always attached great importance to the professional development and internationalization of its faculty team and actively aligns with the Macao SAR Government’s relevant policies to encourage international talents to engage with the country’s development. Going forward, the University will continue to support staff participation in various national studies courses and leverage Macao’s unique role as a hub between Chinese and Western cultures, with the aim of nurturing high-caliber graduates with a global vision and a strong sense of social responsibility.
