Academic Achievements:

Grounded in Hengqin-Macao governance practice, innovative “Fengqiao experience” for new era

The 5th New Era Mediation Forum was recently held in Harbin. Co-organized by Xiangtan University, Harbin University of Commerce, and Mediation Association of Harbin, the forum is a high authoritative and professional academic exchange platform in the field of mediation in China. It called for academic papers from across the country, receiving a total of 326 submissions. After review by a panel of authoritative experts, a number of outstanding award-winning papers were selected.

The paper co-authored by Assistant Professor Fan Xueke and SOL postgraduate student Jin Zhi’an, titled “The Innovative Application of ‘Fengqiao Experience’ in the New Era in the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone (Hengqin)”, won the second prize in the 5th New Era Mediation Forum. It was the only award‑winning entry from Hong Kong and Macao. The award was presented by the Mediation Theory Research and Talent Training Base of the Ministry of Justice. Jin attended the conference and delivered a presentation. The paper is grounded in the frontier of the “one country, two systems” practice in Hengqin and Macao, addresses the needs of cross-border governance, and explores practices for the innovative application of the “Fengqiao Experience” in the new era in the Cooperation Zone. It fully demonstrates the cutting-edge research perspectives and academic literacy of the faculty and students in the fields of social governance and cross-border legal mediation.

Pragmatic competence:

Excel in International Moot Court with Rule of Law Focus

While academic research has yielded fruitful results, CityU students also demonstrated strong professional competence and practical skills in legal competitions. The 2nd ICJ Moot Court Competition was recently held in Chongqing. Co-organized by the Chongqing Bar Association, the Chongqing International Commercial Arbitration Court, and other units, the competition focused on hot-topic issues in international rule of law, and comprehensively assessed participants’ knowledge of public international law, legal reasoning, English proficiency, and cross-cultural communication skills. It attracted 1,055 contestants from 145 teams, representing universities and law firms from 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, as well as the Macao region.

Three students from CityU School of Law: Jin Zhi’an, Chen Xiaoyue, and Liu Chenyu, took part in the competition under the guidance of their mentor, Assistant Professor Fan Xueke. Jin Zhi’an and Chen Xiaoyue won first prizes in the individual competition, while Liu Chenyu won second prize. The team successfully advanced to the national top 12 team and progressed to the final four contention. These results fully demonstrated the distinctive strengths of CityU international law program. The professional competence and comprehensive qualities demonstrated by the students in the competition regarding the rule of law in foreign-related matters serve as strong evidence of the high quality of the university’s talent cultivation in this field.
