The University Held the “Poetry and Calligraphy Exhibition: Love Prevails in the Face of Merciless Hato”

The five-day “Poetry and Calligraphy Exhibition: Love Prevails in the Face of Merciless Hato - Troops, Police, Citizens and Youth Joining Hands in Rescue and Recovery Work” organized by the University and the Calligraphy Learning Center opened at the Macau Cultural Centre on 27 November.

Mr. Sou Chio Fai, Director of Tertiary Education Services Office, Mr. Cheung Man Fai, Acting Chief of Department of Youth, Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Ao Io Nam, Director of Calligraphy Learning Center of Macau, Mr. Ung Choi Kun, Honorary Director of Calligraphy Learning Center of Macau and Vice-Chairman of the University Council and Prof. Shu Guang Zhang, Rector of the University attended the opening ceremony.

It had been more than three months since Macau was hit by Hato, the worst typhoon since the return of its sovereignty, but the memory of Hato’s impact on the daily lives of residents and different industries was very much alive. The typhoon was merciless and its damages to people’s homes could be seen everywhere. Yet, love prevailed. PLA troops from Macao Garrison, the police, citizens, social organizations and youth joined hands in rebuilding our harmonious home. The images of them labouring hard touched many hearts and have become a valuable historical memory. To encourage Macau citizens to unite in the face of natural disaster and tie over difficult times, the University invited renowned Macau calligraphers to wield brushes and create masterpieces with the hope to inspire people to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures against disasters.

The Exhibition presented poetry, calligraphy and photography, showcasing more than 50 pieces of works of poets, calligraphers and senior photographers. Honorary Director Ung Choi Kun especially created a unique 6-meter long calligraphy work on an article he wrote to thank PLA troops from Macau Garrison.
