CityU School of Law Teacher Spoke on the “National Security Legislation for Hong Kong“ at CCTV Interview

On 27 May, Program Coordinator Li Hongjiang of the School of Law was interviewed by CCTV.  Speaking as a member of the Hong Kong and Macao communities, Li expressed his concern about National Security Legislation by National People’s Congress (NPC) for Hong Kong.  He said during the interview that “Macau Special Administrative Region National Security Law” was passed in 2009 and the Safeguarding National Security Commission was set up in 2018.  With the legal protection on national security, Macao does not have a “Macao Independence” problem or other issues that impact on national security.  During the two decades since the return of sovereignty, Macao has maintained stable social and economic development, enabling it to focus on developing its economy.  This is a major driving force for Macao’s burgeoning economy and a major reasons for its stable and harmonious society.  “One Country Two System” has proven to be successful in Macao.

Program Coordinator Li also talked about other views related to the “National Security Legislation for Hong Kong“: “National Security Legislation for Hong Kong“ is vital for national security and an implicit requirement for “One Country Two Systems” and the Basic Law.  It addresses the impending needs arising from the current situations.  The crust of the bill if that it was decided and announced by NPC in accordance with the constitution, upholding the principle of “One Country Two Systems” and striving to safeguard national security.
