The City University of Macau (CityU Macau) held the first lecture of “Distinguish Professor Online Lecture Series” today (6) for comforting the students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The opening chapter invited Prof. Jun Liu, Rector of City University of Macau, to share insights on how Chinese learners master English-language, drawing over 4,000 participants to exchange views on the topic.
CityU Macau pays close attention to student's physical and mental health during this challenging time. The lecture series aim to enrich online education resources and encourage students to keep learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The lecture themed at "How Chinese learn English: Top 10 Secrets" invited Rector Jun Liu to talk about his pathway of mastering English as a foreign language. He pointed out some critical elements of learning English, including creating an English-speaking environment, differences between learning and acquisition, the best learning age, and encouraging students to be confident to say it aloud.
Rector Liu also shared his thoughts based on his teaching experience over the past 30 years on the occasion. He stressed that keeping a good habit of learning and putting theory into practice are crucial to improving English proficiency. He also giveaway ten tips for practicing the language:
- Appreciate poems;
- Try to tongue twisters;
- Practice public speaking;
- Understand humor;
- Learn quotations by heart;
- Read extensively;
- Never stop academic writing;
- Watch talk shows;
- Study presidential speeches;
- Enjoy story-telling and drama.
Rector Liu expressed his best wishes to all freshmen and gave ten guidance to support the students:
- Think critically in class, spend time to read and review your note;
- Learn to be a team player and build self-awareness;
- Dare to confront the challenge;
- Learn to express yourself
- Read extensively across different areas;
- Stay hungry for knowledge and stay open to new things;
- Find opportunities to study outside your professions;
- Learn to observe people and things around;
- Listen to your needs and continue improving yourself;
- Stay humble.
