CityU Macau students win 2nd prize in Economics Essay Competition

The City University of Macau (CityU Macau) student team won the second prize in the Macau Economics Essay Competition's open category. The academic competition drew over 100 people this year and received 50 entries.

The Macao-wide competition has been held successfully for 11 consecutive years. Research topics of this year’s competition include economic recovery in the post-pandemic era and the industrial development in the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone.

Students from the CityU Macau team demonstrated excellent research skills. They are Sun Haojun from the Faculty of Finance; Zheng Jiansong from the Institute of Analytical Psychology; Xu Zhibin from the Faculty of International Tourism and Management; and Mai Jinhang from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Based on Macao’s current labour force structure, our students adopted the cohort-component population prediction method to forecast the local labour force supply and productivity from 2021 to 2046. The research also integrated the labour force participation rate and the Brass Logic Life Table method.

The findings of the CityU Macau team have contributed to the gap in predicting the age structure of local labour force supply and has provided a solid human resource database for the city's implementation of “Talent Regime” and the “Macau New Neighbourhood” project in Hengqin.

The Macau Economics Essay Competition is organised by Macau Economic Association and sponsored by Macao Foundation. The competition aims to encourage the community to look into Macao’s development and nurture research talents to solve the city’s economic challenges.
