The Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD) at the City University of Macau (CityU) has been leading discipline development in urban planning and design, design studies and fine arts, with innovation at its core. FIAD aims to meet the needs of urban governance in the context of social, economic, technological, and environmental changes and nurture top-notch talent to serve urban governance, urban management and design with an international perspective in the new era.

Undergraduate programme in Design
- Integrating various disciplines, such as smart city development, resilient city construction, urban design management and healthy city development, leading the way towards smart cities and future cities in terms of curriculum development.
- Organising annual graduation exhibition to present students’ learning achievements and curatorial skills, which offers a platform to enhance students’ professional competence and overall quality through hands-on experience.
- The Craft Laboratory contains metalwork, woodwork, laser cutting, and 3D printing equipment, providing students with comprehensive hardware facilities and an advanced environment to produce artworks and express their feelings in their art pieces.
- As the only member of the “International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media” (Cumulus) in Macao, students have the opportunity to attend international design workshops during summer and winter breaks each year.
Postgraduate programmes in Urban Planning and Design
- Allowing students to enhance professionalism in smart city development, resilient city construction, urban design management, healthy city development, and geography and environmental science, leading the way towards smart cities and future cities in terms of curriculum development.
- With renowned scholars from universities at home and abroad, FIAD nurtures over a hundred outstanding master’s and doctoral graduates. In the past three years, master’s and doctoral students at FIAD have published more than 40 high-quality articles, of which nearly 50 per cent have been published in core journals and indexed in leading databases such as SCI, SSCI, A&HCI, EI, Peking University’s core journal, and CSSCI. Moreover, students have won more than ten awards from competitions.
Postgraduate programmes in Design
- Covering architectural design (environmental landscape, vernacular architecture), product design (behavioural psychology) and visual communication design (creative dimension, brand image). Compared with other programmes in Macao, the postgraduate programmes offered by FIAD are well-structured with interdisciplinary characteristics.
- As the pillar for discipline development, the Sino-Portugal Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Science of Cultural Heritage Conservation (heritage conservation and analysis, environmental perception) helps students build a solid foundation of comprehensive knowledge and cross-disciplinary design expertise.
Postgraduate programmes in Fine Arts
- Taking theory and history of art as the scope of the research studies, supplemented by fundamental Chinese and foreign art theories, aesthetics, art history and art criticism. Teaching members are acclaimed scholars in the field who are second-class professors and doctoral students’ supervisors in mainland universities with over 30 years of teaching experience.
- Students won prestigious awards in various exhibitions and contests at the national level. Many of them held solo exhibitions and published papers in core journals during their studies.
- Organising the “Fine Arts on Campus” activity and nearly 30 exhibitions and lectures on campus, which are open to students and the public general, enriching the artistic life of the Macao community.

In 2020, FIAD was officially approved as the first member of the “Asian Planning Schools Association” (APSA) in Macao. The membership signifies that urban planning programmes are well-developed with professional expertise and widely recognised and influential.
