Established in 2014, the School of Education (SOE) of the City University of Macau (CityU) focuses on postgraduate education with an emphasis on teaching and academic research. SOE is committed to nurturing high-level teaching, research and education managements and accelerating the development of quality education in Macao and the surrounding regions. SOE has a team of outstanding faculty members, including renowned scholars from home and abroad to serve as distinguished professors on both a full-time and part-time basis, providing students with cutting-edge academic and education and research guidance.
Immersive learning with an emphasis on theory and practice
SOE offers three postgraduate programmes, including the Master of Teaching and Learning Studies programme, Master of Education programme, and Doctor of Philosophy in Education programme.
The Master of Teaching and Learning Studies programme is designed to meet the professional development needs of in-service teachers in terms of teaching enhancement and research. This master’s programme emphasises academic research, application, and integration of intelligent educational technologies and the flipped classroom approach. The programme takes the action research or applied research approach, commonly used in international education, to replace the traditional thesis. This approach is considered unique among local higher education institutions.
The Master of Education programme aims to fill the gap of master’s programmes in education and build a high-level system for postgraduate students in education in Macao. Students will be able to enhance their research and practical teaching standards through immersive learning of multiple research scopes. Graduates will be able to take up pillar roles in the field of teaching and research in line with the development of society in three professional directions, namely educational administration and management, educational information technology and lifelong learning.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Education programme is designed to present the highest academic standards in education and to nurture high-level teaching, research and leadership talents for Macao and the surrounding region. By teaching a variety of research methodologies, the programme allows students to immerse in the latest research projects and exploring cutting-edge educational research topics. Graduate will become high-level leaders in education and research in the local community and the surrounding region.

Building a vital platform for academic exchanges
SOE has established the Research Institute of Macau Education Development. As an important platform for research and academic exchanges in educational sciences, the institute has established a partnership with the Institute of Schooling Reform and Development of East China Normal University, the Key Research Centre Under the Ministry of Education in the Field of Humanities and Social Sciences, to serve the development of basic education in Macao and the Greater Bay Area.
In addition, SOE has a diverse curriculum and a wide range of academic activities. SOE holds regular high-end academic conferences in four places across the straits each academic year, where scholars gather to share and discuss the latest research topics and build a community of students and scholars to jointly carry out studies. It aims to promote the all-rounded development of students, encourage them to take up social responsibility, and contribute to society through innovative research and knowledge transfer.
More than ten high-end academic lectures were held this academic year. SOE has invited renowned scholars to share their insights with the students and the faculty members. They included Prof Chu Zhaohui, Researcher of the National Institute of Education, Vice-President of Chinese Association for Local Education History, member of Academic Committee of Chinese Society of Education, member of board of China Family Education Society and member of the committee; Prof Wang Zhanjun, Professor of respectively Beijing Institute of Technology and Tsinghua University, Director of Research Center for Graduate Education of Beijing Institute of Technology, Vice-President of the Chinese Society of Academic Degrees and Graduate Education and Deputy Director of its Academic Committee; Prof Li Chen, Dissertation Supervisor of PhD student of CityU, Associate Dean of Faculty of Education of Shenzhen University and Deputy Director of Faculty of Education of Shenzhen University, Director of Basic Education and Teacher’s Development Research Centre of Shenzhen University; Prof Tao Kan, Executive Editor of Journal of Distance Education; Prof Li Zhengtao, Distinguished Professor of CityU, Professor of Department of Education of East China Normal University, Director of the Institute of Basic Education Reform and Development of East China Normal University, a key research base in the humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, Director Member of National Academic Committee of Basic Theory of Education; Prof Yang Xiaowei, Distinguished Porfessor of CityU, Professor of Department of Education of East China Normal University, Former Director of the Institute of Basic Education Reform and Development of East China Normal University, a key research base in the humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, Part-time Professor of China Education Policy Research Institute.
In addition, SOE has teamed up with educational institutions in Macao, mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas to provide students with opportunities for short-term overseas exchanges and cultural experiences. The faculty also encourages students to actively engage in academic exchange activities overseas and outside China.
