It’s time to commence the academic year 2022/2023. The City University of Macau (CityU) is gearing up for the new semester. On behalf of the University, Prof. Jun Liu, Rector of CityU, delivered a welcome speech to all staff and students, encouraging all CityU members to aim for higher success and learn to a virtuous, knowledgeable, and practical CityUer.

Dear Professors and Fellow Students,
Greeting to everyone! On behalf of CityU, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all staff and students, especially the 50 plus new academic members and the 3,000 plus new students. I am delighted to see you all here after the summer break and stand ready to embrace a vibrant campus life together. We are confident that with the concerted efforts of all CityUers, we will have a safe, healthy, and energetic academic year.
We are grateful to all professors for their dedication to education and research in the past year. You are a driving force at the University in talent cultivation. Thanks to your tireless efforts and guidance, the University has brought out many high-caliber graduates serving in various industries and contributing to the development of Macao, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and the country.
This academic year, we have a record-high number of professors joining our academic force. On behalf of the University, I would like to welcome you all and hope that you will continue to nurture our students while expanding your academic influence with your scientific record, perseverance, and teaching excellence.
CityU adheres to the philosophy of “Serving Macao and Integrating into the Greater Bay Area”. While with the continuous endeavor in talent cultivation to serve the nation’s development, we are making our way to a metropolitan university emphasizing Macao's Characteristics, China’s Soul, and Global Vision with the aim to fostering high-level and market-orientated professionals.
In recent years, we have made tremendous improvements in our program’s offerings with interdisciplinary development and deployed efforts to enhance education quality with innovative teaching strategies. Many of our faculties and programs have obtained international accreditation, which are the recognition of our high-quality education to fellow students.
We have established various unique research institutes and centers, geared up to the works of the national laboratories; organised high-level academic symposiums; and worked with enterprises and institutions to develop joint laboratories. All of these are the pathway to building a broader and diversified platform for students’ learning, research, and hands-on experience to sharpen their expertise and research capabilities.
We have expanded our exchanges and collaborations with over 200 renowned institutions at home and abroad, giving ample opportunities for students to engage in exchange programs to study at other universities and broaden their international horizons.
We value the holistic development of our students. For that, we created an innovative and experiential learning environment and encouraged students to participate in competitions, community services, and patriotic education activities. We are committed to fostering students to embrace a bright and promising future from education excellence, academic research, cultural literacy, innovation and practice.
Dear freshmen and fellow students, time never looks back. It’s now or never. Take your actions and look forward with determination. We hope that you will set your goals and aim for higher success in the new academic year; make proper arrangement of your time and make good use of all learning opportunities and resources to achieve self-growth; stay hungry for new knowledge and stay humble to seek advice. At the same time, please remember “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”, and that you should bear a growth mindset to every lesson and be an explorer to apply knowledge into innovative practice. Let’s learn and become a virtuous, knowledgeable, and practical CityUer.
Dear students, under the guidance of the MSAR Government Health Bureau and the Education and Youth Development Bureau, the University will make proper arrangements for your return and implement anti-epidemic measures on the campus to ensure your health and safety. Let us work together to build a harmonious campus. At the start of the new semester, we have prepared various activities and orientations to help you blend into our community. We will host the Convocation on 2 September, where we will have the opportunities for face-to-face exchanges to share insights and ideas. It is a brand-new academic year ahead. We wish you good health and success in your studies.
I look forward to seeing you all there!
