Research-based learning steers research quality and practice
SOE offers three postgraduate programs, including the Master of Teaching and Learning Studies program, Master of Education program, and Doctor of Philosophy in Education program.
- Master of Teaching and Learning Studies program is designed to help in-service educators enhance their teaching enhancement and research for career development. This master’s program emphasizes academic research, application, and educational technologies and the flipped classroom approach. Among local higher education institutions, the Master of Teaching and Learning Studies program is only one that takes the action research or applied research approach to replace dissertations which are commonly found by international universities.
- Master of Education program aims to fill the gap in master’s programs in education and promote high-level postgraduate education in Macao. Students will be able to enhance their research and teaching skills through immersive learning of multiple research scopes. Upon graduation, graduates will assume pillar roles in three professional directions: educational administration and management, educational technology, and lifelong learning.
- Doctor of Philosophy in Education program is designed to nurture high-level educators, researchers and management for Macao and the region. By teaching a variety of research methodologies, the program allows students to immerse themselves in the latest research projects and explore cutting-edge educational research topics. Graduates will take on senior roles in the field.

Building a platform for academic exchanges
SOE has established the Research Institute of Macau Education Development to strengthen academic exchanges. As an influential platform for Science of Education, the institute has established a partnership with the Institute of Basic Education Reform and Development of East China Normal University, the Key Research Centre Under the Ministry of Education in the Field of Humanities and Social Sciences, to support the education development in Macao and the Greater Bay Area.
In addition, SOE organizes diverse curriculum and a wide range of learning activities. It will hold high-end academic conferences in four places across the Straits each academic year, where scholars will share and discuss the latest research and build a community of students and scholars to jointly carry out joint projects. Through innovative research and knowledge transfer, it aims to promote the holistic development of students, encourage them to take up social responsibility, and contribute to society. In the academic year 2021/2022, SOE hosted the 15th International Conference of the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS)
SOE will host high-profile seminars and invite renowned scholars to share their insights. The guest speakers included Prof. Distinguished Professor of the Changjiang Scholars Program initiated by the Ministry of Education; Prof. Chu Zhaohui, Researcher of the National Institute of Education, Vice-President of Chinese Association for Local Education History; Prof Li Chen, PhD Dissertation Supervisor of of CityU and Director of Basic Education and Teacher’s Development Research Centre of Shenzhen University; Prof Yang Xiaowei, Distinguished Professor of CityU and Professor of Department of Education of East China Normal University.
In addition, SOE has teamed up with educational institutions in Macao, mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas to provide students with opportunities for short-term exchanges and cultural experiences. The faculty also encourages students to actively engage in academic activities overseas and outside China. In this academic year, students swept first, second and third prizes at the National College Students Digital Media Sci-Tech Works and Creativity Competition.

Promising career prospects
SOE graduates will have promising career prospects. Many students work in education and have the opportunity to advance in academic and administrative roles, such as school management and supervisors for master's degree students. Others choose to pursue further studies at CityU or other prestigious universities in China and abroad, including Renmin University of China, Hong Kong University of Education and City University of Hong Kong.
