CityUers’ sharing: Faculty of Data Science prepares multifaceted talents with high-profile academic platform
With a view to global technological progress and innovative development, the Faculty of Data Science (FDS) of the City University of Macau (CityU) is committed to leveraging its disciplinary strength to nurture driving forces for Macao's development as well as the smart industries in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
- Prof. Zhou Wanlei, a renowned expert and senior academic in data science and computer and network security, steers the disciplinary advancement of the Faculty of Data Science. The faculty is joined by Prof. Mu Yi as a distinguished professor.
- Along with an interdisciplinary curriculum setup, FDS offers the Bachelor of Intelligence Technology and Services program, Master of Data Science program, and Doctor of Philosophy in Data Science program to foster multifaceted professionals who have a solid foundation in data science, computer science, information technology, and applications.
- FDS teamed up with Zhiwang Anyun (Wuhan) Information Technology Co. Ltd. to establish the Joint Laboratory for Data Security and Protection. With the partnership in place, the two sides will develop strategic, innovative and collaborative research, and promote the transformation of R&D results and applications.
- FDS is currently preparing various laboratories in collaborations with the industry to strengthen exchanges and collaboration among research talents, and jointly promote the transformation of scientific and technological achievements The new research units include Joint Laboratory for Spatio-Temporal Data and Artificial Intelligence, Joint Laboratory for Industrial and Intelligent Manufacturing, and City University of Macau and Vcomin Joint Laboratory.
- Students are involved in competitions to put knowledge into practice. They have won outstanding results in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area IT System Development Competition, Macau Cyber Security Competition, and “Huawei Cup” — the 19th China Postgraduate Mathematical Contest in Modelling.
- Graduates will have a promising career in data analytics, management, research, tourism, finance, healthcare and education.

Feng Duanyang, Master of Data Science, Cohort of 2022
Feng has enrolled in the doctoral program with excellent academic results. In his master's studies, Feng has been involved in a number of research projects funded by the Macao Foundation as well as software development, such as paper on fine-grained text sentiment analysis based on machine learning and project about similar urban traffic flow forecasting systems for cross-regional road networks.
"CityU is a broad platform for higher education with credible faculty. I chose to stay here to pursue my doctoral degree after my master's studies. As the motto states, “Virtue, Knowledge, Practice” guides every student at CityU. The University has built a learning environment with credible academics and state-of-the-art equipment. I’ve met many excellent mentors and made many dear friends. At CityU, I’ve acquired cutting edge knowledge in the subject area and developed a comprehensive and systematic knowledge base. Founder and CEO of Shenzhen EEGSmart Technology CO.,Ltd
"I am the Founder and CEO of EEGSmart, recipient of the Certificate for High-Level Professional in Shenzhen, and also a member of the Guangdong Society of Biomedical Engineering and the Shenzhen Association for Artificial Intelligence. With my doctoral background in data science, I led my R&D team to develop a number of brain-computer interface technologies and an integrated multimodal artificial intelligence algorithm system. These new technologies can generate high-precision electroencephalography, collect blood oxygen data, heart rate and other vital signs in real time to form a brain state information intelligent analysis system and form closed-loop smart application platform for sleep ecology. Our comprehensive solution to brain health led us to numerous entrepreneurial competition awards, venture funding from Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission, equity investments and investment from venture capital institutions."

Postdoctoral researcher at Xiamen University. Her research interests include blockchain finance, financial technology, and privacy protection.

Student Lan Wusong in Master of Data Science program, Class of 2021
Lan published academic papers and conference papers in journals. He took part in the development of cross-border data privacy protection standards of the Electronic Association and engaged in research projects funded by the local Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT).
"At CityU, I have broadened my horizons and gained insights. Studying in a completely different city in a different cultural context, it is exciting but challenging. I have settled into the city and the University. During my studies, I acquired a deeper and more precise understanding of the subject through disciplinary courses. Academic activities and research have sharpened my skills in various aspects. In life, I have learned to live alone in a different city with new roommates and partners. During her studies, she published numerous academic papers and conference papers in core journals. In addition to registering over 10 patents and software copyrights, such as "Development and Application of Intelligent Public Security Law Enforcement System," Wang has garnered numerous accolades, namely the second prize of the Zhuhai Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress Award, the 2022 Research Service Award, and the 2022 Outstanding Science Lecturer Award from the Zhuhai Institute of Advanced Technology.
"My research interests include explainable medical artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, AI in ophthalmology research and key technology, application of federal learning and cryptographic mechanisms in the field of digital health, model fusion method based on multi-source data, and diagnosis and prognosis of ocular surface and fundus diseases. I am grateful to CityU and the Faculty of Data Science, where I met my mentor, Prof. Pan Yi, greatly inspired my research career. I am honored to have the opportunity to learn from all esteemed professors and grow with so many outstanding students at the FDS. Going forward, I will pass on the University motto, stay true to my mission, and strive for the best. I will always be brave, loyal, and worthy alumni to my alma mater. Student Xing Lumin in Doctor of Philosophy in Data Science program, Class of 2022
Last year, he published numerous academic papers in core journals and was provincial advanced talents and many provincial awards. For example, Advanced Talent Award in Medical Network Security Construction by Shandong Province Information Network Security Association; first place in AI algorithm track of Shandong Health Medical Big Data Application Competition; and the second prize of Shandong Electronic Medical Record Integration Development – Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Dry Eye Prevention and Treatment Platform.
"Under the guidance of my supervisor, I gained a profound understanding of science. As a result of this productive and happy peer learning environment, my knowledge of science increased exponentially. The knowledge I gained from my input provides me with new research directions that can be applied to existing problems. As my experiment progressed, I was able to demonstrate and prove my hypothesis. My hunger for knowledge helps me expand the depth and breadth of my knowledge. I built a solid foundation through the process of knowledge input and research output, and it’s a way to improve my research methodology and world view."
"Through two years of exploring time-series data analysis and integration, I achieved a breakthrough in my research regarding smart traffic management and authored an article: A Data Fusion Powered Bi-Directional Long Short-Term Memory Model for Predicting Multi-Lane Short Term Traffic Flow, which has been published in IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (JCR Q1, First Ranking Journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences). Furthermore, I examined several aspects of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). Based on that, I have published an article about the application of AI models to computerized tomography (CT) image processing in Advanced Nano Research (JCR Q1, Second Ranking Journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences). My research article regarding applying AI deep learning and audio analysis to diagnose lung cancer was also published in Advanced Nano Research."
