Co-organised by the Census and Statistics Department of the Government of Hong Kong SAR and the International Statistical Institute (ISI), the 59th World Statistics Congress (WSC) of the ISI took place in Hong Kong during 25th – 30th August. Dr Gavin Chau, the Associate Dean of Faculty of Management (FOM); Professor Li Jiazeng, the Executive Director of Research Centre for Macau Social and Economic Development; Professor Xu Lingzhi, the Director of Department of Arts in Design; Dr Eva Khong, Graduate Programme Coordinator of FOM, Dr Perry Ip, Assistant Professor of FOM and Marvin Ma, DBA student, were invited to attend the Congress.
Founded in 1885, the ISI host WSC on a global scale biennially. The Congress brought together over 2,000 participants from the international statistical community and academia, including scholars, entrepreneurs, and Government officials from all over the world. The opening ceremony took place on 25th August, in which Mrs Lily Ou-Yang, the Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee of the 59th WSC of the ISI; and Mr Jae Chang Lee (Republic of Korea), the President of the ISI Executive Committee 2011 – 2013, presented a welcome speech; and Mr Ma Jiantang, the Commissioner of National Bureau of Statistics of China, presented a congratulatory address to the participants. “Youth” was the theme of this Congress which aimed to encourage youth to engage in social affairs and to understand statistics, in addition, to exhibit the increasing significance of statistics in the information era.
Professors and DBA students from the City U attended the opening ceremony and scientific sessions, in which they had the opportunity to communicate with experts and scholars from all over the world, especially with scholars from Brazil, who will be organising the forthcoming Congress in 2015. They also introduced the development of City U to the representatives from Mainland China and abroad. Apart from attending the Congress, Prof Xu and Prof Li visited the University Museum and Art Gallery, Library and a couple of cultural & creative industrial parks of the University of Hong Kong, the valuable experience gained from the trip greatly contributed to the development of the City U in various aspects.
