Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei delivers keynote speech at Global Digital Economy Conference 2024 to share critical information infrastructure cybersecurity
The 2024 Global Digital Economy Conference (GDEC) Digital Security Forum and Beijing Cybersecurity Conference Strategic Summit was inaugurated yesterday at the China National Convention Center. The fifth edition, themed “AI-driven security,” will last for two days. This year’s event features two summits, over twenty panel discussions, and two competitions, attracting over a hundred scholars from 10+ countries and regions, as well as 200+ business representatives from 10+ industries. Prof. Zhou Wanlei, vice rector of the City University of Macau (CityU) delivered a keynote speech at the Critical Information Infrastructure Cybersecurity Symposium (CIICS), the only fully English-language forum at the conference, providing attendees with an unprecedented knowledge feast.

The forum aims to strengthen international collaboration, promote the development of the digital industries, and foster exchange and interaction to explore the future of security empowered by artificial intelligence (AI). Participants discussed the latest research, practical applications, and suggestions regarding AI development, examining the impact of AI-driven security on data, energy, finance, transportation, and manufacturing.
Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei delivered a keynote speech titled “Selected Areas of Attacks and Defence in Critical Information Infrastructures.” His presentation focused on three major cyberattacks: Distributed Denial-of-Service Attacks (DDoS), Malware Attacks, and Advanced Persistent Threats (APT). Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei provided real-world examples to illustrate the evolution and trends of DDoS attacks, emphasizing the importance of preventative measures and defense strategies, such as securing sufficient bandwidth to absorb spam traffic and implementing multi-layered defense systems.
He then discussed the evolution and trends of malware attacks, including the use of viruses, worms, botnets, adware, and ransomware. He emphasized the three primary channels of ransomware distribution: vulnerabilities, email, and advertising. Vice Rector Zhou stressed the importance of using security software, enhancing security awareness, and regularly backing up data to prevent ransomware attacks.
Zhou Wanlei outlined the five stages of APT attacks and emphasized the importance of preventative measures, including enforcing access control, promptly patching vulnerabilities, utilizing endpoint monitoring and detection tools, conducting penetration testing, and monitoring network traffic. He emphasized the importance of building a robust security system and continuously adapting it to counter evolving cyber threats.
The Critical Information Infrastructure Cybersecurity Symposium (CIICS), jointly organized by QAX Group and Lenovo PCCW Solutions (LPS), convenes six leading scholars, experts, chief information security officers, and industry leaders from around the world annually to explore cutting-edge technologies, share best practices, and collaborate on forward-looking research in cybersecurity, ultimately building a more secure digital ecosystem. CIICS, China’s premier international forum focused on the construction and protection of national critical infrastructure and cybersecurity, sets a benchmark for in-depth thinking and forward-looking research in cybersecurity, serving as a vital platform for facilitating global collaboration and driving innovation in cybersecurity through collective wisdom.
