An exchange visit for college students majoring in MICE was held from June 26 to 30, 2013 in Singapore. The event was jointly organized by the Faculty of International Tourism and Management, City University of Macau and the Macau Fair and Trade Association. The visit promoted exchanges between MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) professionals and academia of Macau and overseas and also solidified the understanding of MICE industry. It also widened the international perspective of MICE students within the tertiary education system of Macau.
The delegation was led by City University of Macau Vice Rector and Faculty of International Tourism and Management Dean, Professor Aliana Leong, and Macau Fair & Trade Association Vice President, Miss Chan Si Nga, with Sheraton Macao Director of Human Resources, Miss Chan Lai Si, as consultant. The students in the delegation were MICE majors from the City University of Macau, Macau University of Science and Technology, Institute for Tourism Studies and Macao Polytechnic Institute. Along with the students, the 31 member-delegation included professional MICE managers, MFTA members and other staff. The group visited local MICE professional and academic organizations in Singapore.
The organizations visited in this trip included the Singapore Tourism Board, Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations (AFECA), Singapore Association of Convention and Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers (SACEOS) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Singapore. During the visit, the delegation received a warm and hospitable welcome from various organizations. Three seminars were held and information on Singapore were presented – its tourism development, condition of the Exhibition and Convention industry, tourism, characteristics of the education and trainings in exhibition and convention, and the Singaporean government’s support towards the industry. Students of the delegation actively participated and interacted at the seminars.
The delegation utilized the valuable opportunity to better understand the cultural and national aspects of Singapore by visiting exhibition venues - Marina Bay Sands Convention Center, Singapore EXPO, Essential Eames: Herman Miller Furniture Fair, Indian Handicrafts Fair, Cultural and Creative Industries district and other downtown attractions.
The organizers believe that students’ understanding of the local exhibition industry and its corresponding education had been greatly enhanced and their own active learning has been highly motivated through the effective collaboration, interactions, field trips and experience sharing of this visit to Singapore. The organizers expect for further collaboration and networking between the MICE professionals and academia of Macao and Singapore in the future.
