Rector Liu Jun visits Poi Lam High School in Malaysia to advance professional development of nearly 100 English teachers in Chinese independent high schools

At the invitation of the Council of Perak Chinese School Committees, Rector Jun Liu of the City University of Macau (CityU) today visited Poi Lam High School, one of the nine Chinese independent high schools in Perak, Malaysia, to conduct a professional development workshop for nearly 100 English teachers from these schools. This event, organized by the Council of Perak Chinese School Committees and co-organized by the nine independent high schools, marked a significant milestone in the academic exchanges and collaboration between CityU and the nine schools, with the aim of driving education forward together. Rector Liu was accompanied by Li Xi, executive associate dean of the Faculty of International Tourism and Management, Huam Hon Tat, professor at the Faculty of Business, and Che Ka I, director of the Rector’s Office during the visit and exchange.

Rector Liu presented the “Top 10 Controversies in English Language Teaching” in an accessible yet profound manner during the lecture on the professional development of English teachers, inspiring the teachers to engage in thoughtful discussions. The lecture was a combination of pedagogical theories and teaching practices, where Rector Liu not only shared his profound academic insights but also offered useful and efficient teaching strategies and methods, illustrated with real classroom examples.

The lecture was highly engaged, with participants eagerly raising questions and discussing the challenges they had encountered in teaching English. Rector Liu encouraged the teachers to innovate and improve their teaching methods to achieve better teaching results and learning experiences. This session not only introduced them to practical strategies but also sparked their interest in language education research, with many expressing a desire to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees at CityU in the future.

The workshop had a lasting positive impact on the teachers in the nine Chinese independent high schools in Perak, equipping them with effective teaching skills and, according to many participants, increasing their confidence and capacity for pedagogical innovation. Specifically, the teachers gained deeper insights into approaches to teaching English more effectively and using English as a medium for other subjects. Meanwhile, they also explored ways of engaging students in learning and improving their language skills. The workshop struck a balance between theoretical frameworks and practical strategies, accompanied by real-life examples.

In the afternoon, Rector Liu met with outstanding student representatives from the nine independent schools. Beginning with Macao’s unique geographical location and its role as a cultural bridge between East and West, he gave the students an insight into the city’s distinctive cultural character as a global metropolis. Rector Liu also introduced CityU’s flagship programs and encouraged students to pursue their dreams and broaden their horizons to develop a global vision. He also urged the young generation of students in the new era to better showcase their talents on the global stage.

The visit and workshop further deepened the academic ties between CityU and the nine independent schools in Perak, laying a solid foundation for future collaboration. The schools also expressed their enthusiasm for further exchanges and cooperation with CityU to jointly contribute to the flourishing of education.
