CityU organizes first law study tour to enhance faculty and students’ understanding of national laws

To implement President Xi Jinping’s key takeaways on his visit to Macao during the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland, ensure the stable and long-term practice of “one country, two systems” in the new era, and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the legal community in the mainland, Vice Rector Ip Kuai Peng and Program Coordinator of the School of Law (SOL) at City University of Macau recently led a study tour to Beijing for exchange activities. The delegation is composed of faculty and students from SOL. This exchange activity was supported by the eighth bureau of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and the Legal Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, and was sponsored by the Macau Foundation.

Additionally, the delegation visited the law faculties of renowned mainland universities, including Renmin University of China, China University of Political Science and Law, and Beijing Normal University. During this period, they engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as the cultivation of legal talent in foreign-related law, master’s degree education in law, comparisons between the legal systems of Macao and the mainland, and the legal development in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. This visit facilitated exchanges and cooperation between legal education institutions from both regions. The delegation also toured the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and the National Museum of China, experiencing World Heritage sites and China’s rich historical culture, deepening their understanding of Chinese history and culture.

The study tour enriched faculty and students’ understanding of national development through a diverse and multi-dimensional approach. By visiting national legislative bodies, judicial institutions, and prestigious law schools, as well as exploring significant cultural landmarks, they gained deeper insights into Chinese culture and the country’s legal framework. This promoted exchanges between the CityU Faculty of Law and the mainland legal community. Additionally, the delegation engaged with representatives and experts on topics such as “deepening the study of the Macao Basic Law”, “legal development in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin”, and “cultivating talents in foreign-related law”, which yielded valuable insights.
