Congratulations! CityU Honors Class students win first and second prizes in US mathematical contest in modeling

Two teams composed of Honors Class students from City University of Macau (CityU) stood out in the 2026 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM), among over 30,000 teams from 28 countries and regions. They won a meritorious winner (international first prize) and an honorable mention (international second prize) in this contest, demonstrating CityU great achievements in cultivating top-tier innovative talent. The results was announced the recently.

The winning teams are both from the Faculty of Data Science, with five students coming from the Honors Class. The team received the meritorious winner award comprised Jiang Siyu, Yang Zhe and Song Shanquan, third-year students majoring in intelligence technology and service. The team received the honorable mention consists of third-year computer science students Tian Yunshuo and Li Guolin as well as first-year student Xin Ruoshui. Both teams were supervised by Assistant Professor Cui Sanshuai, a supervisor of the Honors Class. In this contest, the Honors Class students excelled in teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration, tackling complex problems through modeling, solving and verifdication. They completed full English academic papers within a tight schedule, demonstrating a solid professional foundation and outstanding research potential.

As their supervisor, Prof. Cui Sanshuai has long been dedicated to multimedia information security research and machine learning applications. During the summer of 2025, he participated in a joint training program for top-tier innovative talent at the headquarters of X-Institute, together with the Honors Class mentor team, enhancing his research supervision capabilities. Throughout the competition, he personalized training plans according to their academic strengths, developing their abstract modeling abilities and teamwork spirit, which laid a solid foundation for their outstanding results.

Since its launch in September 2024, CityU Honors Class has adhered to the philosophy of research-led learning and the cultivation of top-tier innovative talent, introducing a talent development system of “progressive in-depth research” based on the 15-year experience of the Tsien Excellence in Engineering Program. The Honors Class emphasizes interdisciplinary integration and mentor-guided growth, offering “X-idea” challenging courses and SRT programs, encouraging students to nurture their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities through real-world problems. This historic breakthrough in a premier international academic competition not only validates the effectiveness of the Honors Class talent cultivation model, but also inspires more Honors Class students to embrace challenges and strive for excellence, contributing new caliber talent to technological innovation in Macao and the nation.

The MCM/ICM is an international undergraduate competition organized by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) and is one of the world’s most influential mathematical modeling contests. It tests participants’ abilities in mathematical modeling, data analysis, teamwork, and academic writing in English. The Meritorious Winner award is given to only approximately 7% of all entries.
