On September 7th, at the invitation of the Institute of Data Science of CityU, Dr. Wan Biyu, the Chief Scientist of the CSUS National Smart City Joint Lab, MOHURD, delivered a lecture titled “Data Science Practices: A Case Study of Large-scale City Data Simulation”. The lecture was chaired by George Du, the President of the Institute of Data Science.
Starting with the achievements and problems in the development of modern cities, Dr. Wan discussed the relationship between smart city and data science, and then moved to the field of city simulation research. By discussing the practical application of city simulation systems, Dr. Wan introduced the policies and standards related to building of city simulation systems. In addition, Dr. Wan introduced the development of prediction of smart city simulation, proposed building of smart cities, and, taking water, air, natural disasters, etc. as examples, introduced in detail the importance, scientific basis, scientific organization and popular research topics of city environment simulation. During the lecture, through dynamic pictures, videos and other data, Dr. Wan presented advanced areas of knowledge including systems for large-scale analog computing of urban wind, air and natural disaster environments, urban air age simulation, large-scale city computational simulation of water environment, large-scale city computational simulation of air pollutant diffusion. In the end, taking the integration and development of simulation technology with, among other fields, smart houses, VR technology and city management as an example, Dr. Wan talked about the future development trends in the discipline and field of simulation technology, and shared great real-life cases of smart city.
During the lecture, the interaction between Dr. Wan and the postgraduates was lively. Dr. Ma enthusiastically answered their questions regarding the direction of development of smart city, core technologies for a simulation technology system, etc.
After the lecture ended, Professor Cai Zhiming, Head of the Academic Affairs Office of the City University of Macau, and George Du, the President of the Institute of Data Science, gave Dr. Wan Biyu souvenirs as gifts.
Dr. Wan is currently the Chief Scientist of the CSUS National Smart City Joint Lab, MOHURD, the Vice Chair of ISO/TC 268/SC1 Smart Community Infrastructure, convener of TG2/WG4, Convener of IEC Sy (Smart Cities) WG2, an Expert for ITU-T (Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities), an expert for ISO/IEC JTC1 WG11 (Smart Cities), an expert at Sino-Britain Cooperation Commission on Smart City of BSI, an adjunct professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, a visiting professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a visiting researcher at Renmin University of China.
