Famous Commentator Yu Tzu-Hsiang from Taiwan Spoke at Distinguished Lecture of CUM

Professor Yu Tzu-Hsiang, an oral communication expert and famed commentator from Taiwan, has recently been invited to City University of Macau as a keynote speaker of the Distinguished Lecture Series of CUM, bringing a wonderful lecture “Things a Spokesperson Must Knows” to the students and teachers of City U. A Ph.D. of Communication Studies from University of Denver, Prof. Yu Tzu-Hsiang has worked in Shih Hsin University for a number of years, serving consecutively as the head of International Academic Exchange Center, Department of Speech Communication, and Graduate Institute of Communications. Outside of academia, Prof. Yu has also been involved in politics previously as the Director of Department of Information, Taipei City Government, and the Spokesman for Taipei City Government and Lien Chan and Soong Chu-Yu Campaign Headquarters. Prof. Yu is also a well-known media commentator in both mainland China and Taiwan, voted as one of the “Top Ten Chinese Debaters” by the Chinese debate website www.bianlun.net.

This lecture has attracted an audience of over 200 students, staffs and general public.

Registrar Prof. Tsai Niann-Chung introduced Prof. Yu to the audience and engaged him to be the Curriculum Consultant for Social Sciences for City U. Rector Prof. Pang Su-Seng then expressed our most sincere welcome on behalf of the University, and presented Prof. Yu with souvenirs.

Utilizing his rich experiences as a reporter, a professor and a spokesman for both a government and a party, Prof. Yu summarized several pointers for being a good spokesperson, including “speaking internally is just as important as speaking externally”, “a spokesperson not only speaks but also communicate”, “strengthen your image every time you speak”, “telling a story is more vital then telling significant or trivial things”.

Prof. Yu’s lecture had both depth and actuality and was an excellent combination of theories and practices. Using current events such as the missing flight MH370 and reporters being pushed around by entourage of Chief Executive of Macau as examples, he explained in practical terms how a spokesperson could handle any situation flexibly and apply the four principles of “Approachable, Sincere, Altruistic, Professional” when speaking to the media and the public.

Full of humor, easy to understand yet inspiring, the lecture was interspersed with applause and laughter. Prof. Yu has gifted the audience with a wonderful experience filled with both academic learning and relaxed interaction. The Distinguished Lecture Series of CUM is established by City University of Macau to provide both academic and career guidance for our students and is one of the most important initiatives in achieving City U’s goal of giving the students a holistic education. There will be two more lectures “The Macau Aspect in the Branding of Chinese Culture” and “Create Your Dream, Design Your Life” to be held on May 17th and 28th; they will also be opened to students, staffs and the general public.
