The City University of Macau (CityU) values the cultivation of academic abilities among its postgraduate students and continues to provide opportunities and platforms for them to participate in academic activities. As part of its new Postgraduate Academic Lecture Series, the Graduate School held the first lecture yesterday at the Taipa campus to promote the building of an academic culture among postgraduate students. The lecture was delivered by Professor Dai Dingcheng of the Faculty of Innovation and Design, on the topic of “Academic Civilization and Research Paradigm.” The event attracted a large number of faculty, students, and scholars from both within and outside the university to attend.

Prof. Dai Dingcheng gave a lecture on academic civilization and the scientific nature of academic research. He elaborated on academic civilization from six aspects: academic personality, academic integrity, academic ethics, academic humility, academic norms, and academic precipitation. He emphasized that academic norms are the minimum standards for academic research and suggested that those with lofty aspirations must learn to conduct academic research. He also shared his teaching experience and introduced research mythologies, encouraging everyone to ask questions and inspiring them towards academic innovation. During the Q&A session, students and faculty members exchanged ideas and discussed solutions to issues such as ethical standards and academic research. Prof. Dai used real-life examples to answer students’ questions and resolve their puzzles in their research work.

Finally, Associate Professor Zhou Long, associate dean of the Graduate School, gave a summary of the event. He mentioned that the lecture not only helped students gain a thorough understanding of the importance of academic norms and ethics, but also provided significant guidance for improving research methods and ways of thinking. He also mentioned that the Graduate School will continue to hold a series of lectures on relevant topics to promote the overall academic level of graduate students.
