The 6th National University Students’ Tourism Design Competition, jointly organized by the Tourism Education Branch of China Tourism Association, the Xiamen University, the Quanzhou Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism Bureau, the Licheng District Committee of the CPC Quanzhou Municipal Committee, and the Licheng District People’s Government of Quanzhou, was successfully completed in 2023. A team of three master’s students, Jiang Youxuan, Zhang Xiaorui, and Chen Chuqi from the Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD) at City University of Macau (CityU), participated in the competition. With their work “Nanyang Story,” they stood out among 427 teams from 145 universities across the country and won the second prize. Their mentor, Assistant Professor Li Kerun, was also awarded the Best Mentor Award.

The National University Students’ Tourism Design Competition enjoys a high reputation in mainland China. This year’s competition focuses on promoting Quanzhou as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and enhancing cultural and creative tourism and the integration of culture and tourism. The competition attracted 427 teams from 145 universities across the country, including Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Xiamen University, Nankai University, South China Normal University, and Jiangnan University. A total of 307 entries were received, and 15 teams made it to the finals.

The CityU’s entry “Nanyang Story” was inspired by the unique architectural style of Licheng in Quanzhou, where traditional Chinese buildings and Western-style buildings coexist and are deeply rooted in the architectural art of world cultural heritage. This work is based on the emotions of tourists and artistic integration, bringing a new interpretation of traditional aesthetics of the ancient city. Through on-site research, the goal is to achieve a harmonious combination of contemporary aesthetics and practicality.

Since its establishment in 2018, the National University Students’ Tourism Design Competition has successfully held five editions. This year’s competition focuses on “tourism + cultural and creative industries” and aims to promote the preservation and promotion of Quanzhou’s World Heritage Site, as well as inspire cultural inheritance and promote the deep integration of culture, innovation, and tourism. The competition not only provides an experiential platform for the interaction among university students, but also nurtures outstanding creative talents and enhance exchanges between students and the market, thereby serving the tourism industry.
