CityU hosts 2nd International Conference on Big Data and Privacy Computing, bringing together research findings to pioneer innovative development
The 2024 2nd International Conference on Big Data and Privacy Computing (BDPC 2024), organized by City University of Macau (CityU) and supported by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of Macau (IEEE Macau), Guizhou University, Fuzhou University, and Fujian Normal University, opened today (11th) at CityU with over 100 experts, scholars, and industry professionals from related fields participating both online and on-site. During the two-day international conference, they will share the latest research findings, discuss cutting-edge issues and development in big data and privacy computing.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Sun Xin from the Faculty of Data Science (FDS) at CityU, with vice rector and dean of FDS, Prof. Zhou Wanlei, and associate dean, Prof. Liu Wenjian, in attendance. Prof. Zhou Wanlei expressed gratitude to the speakers and the organizing committee for their efforts in making this event possible. He gave an overview of CityU’s disciplinary development and achievements and expressed hope for a fruitful academic exchange during the conference in Macao. Prof. Liu Wenjian, on behalf of the organizing committee, congratulated the conference and warmly welcomed all the experts and scholars in attendance. He encouraged participants to engage in the exchanges during the conference and expressed sincere gratitude to the organizing committee.

On the first day, keynote speeches were given by well-known experts from China and abroad, including Chen Min, professor from South China University of Technology; Chen Yingying, professor from Rutgers University; Xu Shengmin, associate professor from Fujian Normal University; and Liu Ximeng, professor from Fuzhou University. Wang Xiaofen, associate professor from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China was invited to give a special presentation.
Prof. Chen Min from South China University of Technology (IEEE Fellow, IET Fellow, AAIA Fellow) gave a keynote speech on “Digital Intelligent World Empowered by Near Human Big Data Sensing.” Prof. Chen pointed out that in the future network, providing ultra-low latency, non-intrusive, and immersive service experiences present various challenges, which continuously acquiring multimodal information without disturbing users. He introduced the development of various functional structures and, based on this, the body area network (BAN) can support the AI model of un-equipment in the digital world.

Prof. Chen Yingying from Rutgers University (NAI Fellow, IEEE Fellow, AAIA Fellow, ACM Distinguished Scientist) gave a presentation on “AI-Driven Efficiency and Security in Edge Sensing and Computing: Advancements, Vulnerabilities, and Opportunities.” She mainly discussed the latest developments in AI edge sensing and computing achieved through hardware-software co-design and AI implementation on devices, emphasizing their crucial contributions to achieving efficient reasoning.
Prof. Xu Shengmin, associate professor from Fujian Normal University (selected for the national high-level talent program (overseas)) gave a presentation on “Towards Security, Functionality and Efficiency of Cloud Data Access Control.” He pointed out that data is an important strategic asset for a country and data security is an essential component of national security. He also shared a framework example called bilateral access control, which strengthened existing dual-policy access control models.

Prof. Liu Ximeng from Fuzhou University (IEEE Senior Member) gave a keynote speech on “Secure Outsourced Computation: Current and Future Trends,” providing a new secure outsourcing computing framework that balances efficiency and security. This framework can be used to build secure outsourced data mining and analysis, with practical applications in various aspects, including electronic healthcare and remote identity verification.
There were two workshops were held in the afternoon, discussing “Intelligent Recommendation Algorithm and Software Detection Based on Data Model” and “Advanced Blockchain Theory and Data Security.” They were chaired by Prof. Kiwon Lee from Hansung University in South Korea and Associate Professor Yingzuobin from the Faculty of Data Science of the City University of Macau, respectively. Associate Professor Wang Xiaofen from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China also gave a presentation on “A Dropout-Tolerated Privacy-Preserving Decentralized Federated Learning Framework,” proposing a new privacy-protected decentralized federated learning solution system that utilizes blockchain and modified identity-based broadcast encryption algorithms and can achieve privacy protection and tolerate errors or loss of information.
The second day of the conference will feature two online workshops, chaired by Assistant Professor Zhang Lefeng from the Faculty of Data Science of the City University of Macau and Dr. Lo Man Fung, a member of the conference technical committee from the University of Hong Kong. The guest speakers will discuss the topics of “Data Analysis and Privacy Protection” and “Wireless Communication Network and Image Analysis.”
All papers for this conference have undergone a strict review process by the program committee and the accepted papers will be published by IEEE as part of the proceedings of BDPC 2024. They will also be included in the IEEE online database for retrieval by EI and SCOPUS.
