Blooming Flame Flowers and Splendid Prospects | 2018/2019 Ceremony for Conferment of Higher Degrees of City University of Macau

The 2018/2019 Ceremony for Conferment of Higher Degrees of City University of Macau was held at C-Hall on June 1. Mr. Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, Xue Xiaofeng, Deputy-Director of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, Sílvia Ribeiro Osório Ho, Deputy Director of the Macao Higher Education Bureau, Gou Renmin, Director-General of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, Chan Meng Kam, Chairman of Council of City University of Macau, Rector Shu Guang Zhang and other distinguished guests and university leaders attended the ceremony. Secretary Tam Chon Weng and Rector Shu Guang Zhang addressed the ceremony respectively.

In his speech, Secretary Tam Chon Weng said that the SAR Government has always been concerned with the development of higher education, implementing the policy concept of "Education-driven Prosperity for Macao, Building Macao by Capable Talents", and continuously increasing the investment in educational resources to promote scientific and technological innovation and talent cultivation in Macao's universities. The SAR Government will continue to support the development of CityU and other universities in Macao, and hope that CityU will continue to carry forward their own school-running characteristics, continue to provide intellectual services for the construction and governance of Macao, closely follow the development needs of the region and the country, and continue to nurture more young talent who "love the motherland and Macao". CityU should seize the historical opportunity of the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, complement and cooperate with the universities in the region, and leverage the strategies of "going global and bringing in" to enhance CityU's teaching and research strength and publicity, so as to make greater contributions to the sustainable development of the country, Macao and the region.

Rector Shu Guang Zhang pointed out in his speech that in recent years, CityU has attached great importance to the development of postgraduate education. The Graduate School was established to ensure the smooth running of various postgraduate teaching and research activities. The postgraduate programmes are more distinctive, the qualification requirements for postgraduate instructors are more stringent, the postgraduate guidance and management are more standardized, the study and research capabilities of graduate students are further enhanced, and the quality and level of postgraduate education have been continuously improved. Under the guidance of the New Higher Education Law, CityU has initiated the postgraduate education reform to continuously improve the self-learning and social service capabilities of students. CityU attaches great importance to expanding the international perspective of graduate students, encouraging them to understand the international community, and improve themselves to become middle and high-end talents with patriotism, international quality and global responsibility.

This year, 85 students from CityU received a doctoral degree, 412 students obtained a master's degree, 890 students obtained a bachelor's degree, and the total number of graduates reached 1,387. The 2018/2019 Ceremony for Undergraduate Congregation of CityU will be held at C-Hall on June 2.
