CAS Academician Guan Xiaohong Deliveres lecture at CityU on cyber-physical energy systems

In celebration of the 45th anniversary of the City University of Macau, the University hosted a Doctor honoris causa Lecture today at the Taipa Campus, to foster academic exchange and explore frontier research topics. The event featured Guan Xiaohong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), renowned systems engineering expert, and honorary doctor of CityU Macau. Speaking under the theme “Cyber-Physical Energy Systems for Resolving the Global Warming Crisis in the Age of Intelligence and Networking”, he shared cutting-edge academic insights and practical experiences, enriching the anniversary celebrations with profound scholarly depth.

Rector Jun Liu extended a warm welcome to Academician Guan, noting the timely significance of the lecture topic. He highlighted that as a core city within the Greater Bay Area, Macao is actively pursuing green and low-carbon development. Rector Liu expressed confidence that Guan’s presentation would not only broaden the academic horizons of faculty and students in energy science and intelligent technology but also provide valuable intellectual inspiration for green development and technological innovation in Macao and beyond.

During the lecture, Academician Guan began by outlining “The Development Trends of Information Science and Technology: Integration of Informatization and Industrialization”. He systematically elaborated on how Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), driven by the waves of networking and intelligence, can empower the transformation of energy structures to combat global warming. He emphasized that to address the supply-demand balancing challenges posed by integrating renewable energy into the grid, establishing a new energy architecture characterized by deep integration among information systems, physical systems, and human stakeholders has become an essential pathway to achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.

Academician Guan further dissected the overall architecture of energy stations, which encompasses coordinated strategies across “source-storage synergy, hydrogen-electricity synergy, and supply-demand synergy”. He demonstrated integrated technical pathways involving perception, communication, computation, and optimization. To vividly illustrate industry-academia outcomes, Guan shared several typical application scenarios, with a detailed focus on the zero-carbon intelligent energy station project in Yulin, Shaanxi Province. This project provides comprehensive green power solutions for major events and 5G base stations, showcasing advanced technologies such as digital twin systems for energy stations. He offered a clear visualization of the deep interaction between physical entities and digital models and proposed a novel “computing network – communication network – energy network” tri-network convergence structure. This innovative framework explores new avenues for providing energy security to distributed zero-carbon data centers, offering fresh perspectives for technological innovation and industrial upgrading within the energy sector.

During the Q&A session, faculty and students actively engaged with Academician Guan Xiaohong on topics such as stability control for renewable energy integration into the grid, modeling accuracy of digital twin systems in energy stations, and the feasibility of implementing the tri-network convergence architecture in complex environments. This lecture not only provided a valuable platform for CityU faculty and students to interact with a top-tier scholar and deepened their understanding of cyber-physical energy systems, but it also held significant importance for advancing disciplinary development and supporting Macao’s green, low-carbon development. Furthermore, it stimulated intellectual exchange and academic inspiration among attendees from both academia and industry.
