CityU holds academic lecture to explore deep learning applications in predicting biological sequence motifs

Recently, City University of Macau (CityU) held a lecture themed “Deep Learning Based Biological Motifs Mining” at Taipa campus. The lecture was delivered by Professor Deshuang Huang from the College of Information Science & Technology, Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo, attracting numerous faculty members and students to participate.

During the lecture, Professor Huang shared his cutting-edge research in the fields of biomedical data mining and the applications of deep learning. Currently, Professor Huang serves as a professor and director of the Biomedical Data Mining and Computing Lab at the Ningbo Institute of Digital Twin. He is also an important member of many academic groups, such as a foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering and an IEEE Fellow. He has profound research achievement in the fields of deep learning and bioinformatics, and has significant academic influence in the applications of predicting biological sequence motifs.

In the lecture, Professor Huang introduced the fundamental topics in biological sequence motif prediction and systematically expounded on how “deep neural network,” a nascent and popular technology, works in this area. He briefly reviewed several classic models of deep neural networks and the research landscape of biological sequence motif prediction, delving into the existing gap in applying deep learning in motif prediction, and gave an overview on some motif prediction methods, such as high-order convolutional neural network architectures, weakly supervised convolutional neural network architectures, the sequence-and shape-based deep learning, and bidirectional recurrent neural networks in DNA motif prediction. In addition, Professor Huang also proposed some new research questions in this field, encouraging the participants to think deeply and explore the cutting-edge topics.
