The Year of the Hare is just around the corner. During its annual celebration of the Lunar New Year, the City University of Macau (CityU) organized a variety of activities and sent seasonal blessings to students, faculty, and staff. CityU aimed to build a festival atmosphere on campus by hosting various events with traditional cultural characteristics and strengthening cohesion among all CityU members.

Spring Couplets Calligraphy Workshop and Lucky Red Pockets Giveaway

To build a festival atmosphere and send cordial greetings to residential students, the Student Affairs Office (SAO) organized a workshop for students to DIY their spring couplets and “invited” the Chinese God of Fortune to giveaway red pockets with cash vouchers. Han Xiaosheng, a postgraduate student from the Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD), was invited by SAO to teach students how to write blessing lines in calligraphy on red paper and to embellish their spring couplets with rabbit drawings. By participating in this festive workshop that blended Chinese culture and local traditions, students were able to take home a unique piece of “Macao memory” and send their “DIY” best wishes to family and friends.

New Year Sweet Rice Cake Giveaway, Spring Couplets Calligraphy Activity, and Needle Felting Workshop

The traditional New Year Sweet Rice Cake carries auspicious blessings and best wishes. During the holiday season, the Human Resources Office (HRO) distributed rice cake vouchers to send seasonal blessings and care to all employees.

The HRO also prepared traditional red papers, golden ink, and brush pens in January for staff members to customize their own spring couplets. The three-day activity drew active participation and was a wonderful opportunity for staff members to mingle and exchange ideas. In addition, HRO also invited an experienced handicraft instructor to host a Needle Felting Workshop. Those who attended agreed that handicrafts were a thoughtful way to send new year blessings and would send them as a gift to their family and friends.
