CityU organises Constitution and Basic Law contest

To celebrate the 22nd anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland, reinforcing students’ understanding of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China and the Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, the City University of Macau (CityU) organised the “Quiz on Constitution and the Basic Law of the Macau SAR” this afternoon, helping students develop an awareness of “understanding, obeying, and abiding the law” and understanding the successful practice of “One Country, Two Systems” in Macao SAR.

Mr. Chan Iok Wai, Head of Department of Students of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, Mr. Xu Zhiping, Deputy Director of the University Office under the Education and Youth Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of Central People’s Government in Macao SAR, Prof. Kong Fanqing, Vice-Rector of CityU, and Mr. He Binghao, President of the CityU Students’ Association, attended the opening ceremony of the competition.

The competition is of significance in upholding the authority of the Constitution and the Basic Law, building up youth’s awareness of the rule of law and compliance with the law, and enhancing education on the promotion of the Constitution and the Basic Law. The inclusion of such a meaningful event in the 10th anniversary series of activities by the CityU Students’ Association demonstrates its commitment to upholding the core values of “Loving the Country, Loving Macao” and promoting correct values, as stated in its inaugural address.

Student He Binghao shared his experience after joining the event. He said that the Constitution and Basic Law are theoretical-based legal documents. Through mindful observation and active study, students will learn more about current affairs that link to real-life experiences and humbly seek advice from their teachers, so that they can better understand the contents of the Constitution and the Basic Law and thoroughly understand their principles and spirit, hence enhancing their civic awareness, patriotism and awareness of the rule of law, and become citizens who understand, obey, study and abide the law.

The competition invited Dr. Zhu Shihai, Association Professor of Macau University of Science and Techonology as the general jury, Mr. Fong In Long, member of Doctoral Think Tank Committee of the Macao Youth Patriotic Education Association, and Mr. Liu Huanyu, Chief Supervisor of CityU Students’ Association to be the juries. After three rounds of matches, the first, second and third place winners were stood out.

In addition to this competition, CityU also organised a number of competitions during March’s “Culture Month” to cultivate students’ quality and promote their all-round development, including the “CityU Life in my eyes Microfilm Competition”, “1st Cooking Contest of City University of Macau”, “CityU and I” photography competition and other sports contests.
