The Faculty of Finance (FOF) of the City University of Macau (CityU) organised the 18th session of the Finance Seminar Series at the Ho Yin Convention Centre in the Taipa campus. The seminar themed “Reflections on the Development of Macau Bond Market and its Talent Demand” invited Ms Tenny Ruan, Executive Director and Vice President of ChongWa (Macao) Financial Asset Exchange Co Ltd, to share her insights.
In his remark, Prof Jun Liu, Rector of CityU, thanked Ms Ruan for her generous support for the seminar. He pointed out that as a strategic area, finance is linked to different disciplines and suggested that students should not only specialise in the finance area but should also develop expertise and knowledge in other areas to enhance their overall capabilities. As an independent faculty focusing on finance, FOF has been nurturing high-end talents for the development of the local financial industry since its establishment. Rector Liu hoped that the seminar would allow students to seize the development opportunities of Macao’s bond market and career prospects, promote the building of Macao’s financial talent reserve, and enable more young people to join the modern financial industry.
During the seminar, Ms Ruan gave an overview of the financing market outside the mainland and the current state of the financial environment in Macao. She pointed out that as the third largest industry in Macao, the financial industry is increasingly becoming an important gateway to local adequate economic diversification. Through introducing the environment, policies, financial system, capital situation, residents’ investment preferences, types of financial institutions and financial laws of Macao’s financial market, Ms Ruan demonstrated great potential and development opportunities for Macao in developing its financial industry, accelerating the development of a bond market, and actively developing wealth management business. Ms Ruan also introduced Macao as a new starting point for bond financing businesses outside the mainland and that its bond financing market is going through a development process from scratch to strengths. She also compared Macao’s bond market with international bond issues in terms of currency, maturity, industry, interest rate, and region and type of investors over the past three years. She provided data on the current state of the Macao bond market and the areas for improvement.
Ms Ruan also shared her insights on the demand for talents in the bond market, pointing out that human resource is the first element of development, and the future growth of Macau’s financial market needs to nurture talents from now on.
The ChongWa (Macao) Financial Asset Exchange Co Ltd (MOX) was established in 2018 to provide issuance, listing and trading services for Macao bonds, and signed a memorandum of understanding with Luxembourg Stock Exchange, known as LuxSE, in 2020 to launch two-way listing products on the two exchanges, accelerate interconnectivity, build a bridge to the offshore Renminbi bond market, and develop innovative cooperation around green finance.
Other guests attended the seminar included: Mr Ray Chan, Head of Securities and Head of Nova Taipa Branch of Well Link Bank, Prof Cheung Wai Kong, Dean of FOF, and Prof Khong Yueng Wah, Associate Dean of FOF.
