CityU organizes postgraduate lecture to explore the relationship between humanistic care and academic research

To improve the academic ability and research level of postgraduate students, City University of Macau (CityU) Graduate School held a series of lectures aimed at enhancing the academic skills of postgraduate students. The first lecture of this semester was held yesterday at the Taipa Campus and was hosted by Han Haoying, professor of Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD). The lecture, “Redefining Academic Research: A Humanistic Approach and an Enjoyable Journey,” discussed the importance of humanistic approach in academic research, helping postgraduate students re-examine and enjoy their academic journey while enhancing their academic abilities and happiness.
In his speech, Ip Kuai Peng, vice rector and dean of the Graduate School, emphasized that humanistic care was indispensable in academic life. He pointed out that academic journeys were not only a rigorous exploration of knowledge, but also a spiritual pursuit full of enjoyment and a sense of achievement. He hoped that through this lecture, students would learn to find joy in intense academic research, maintain a positive attitude, and reach a higher level in the academic field.

This lecture invited FIAD Prof. Han Haoying, Professor of Faculty of Innovation and Design, principal advisor of Culture and Arts Foundation, and director of Urban Design Branch of The Architectural Society of China, as the guest speaker. Prof. Han mentioned that with the changes in the social environment, the purpose of academic research should not be limited to pursuing the number of publications or showing off impractical skills but should return to its essence, focus on solving problems through research, and enjoy the process of investing in research.
Prof. Han pointed out that the combination of humanistic care and subject knowledge also had a profound impact on the direction of academic research. He used urban research as an example, stating that an investigation grounded in a humanistic perspective, applying research methods of anthropological and sociology, would open up a new path for research, allowing researchers to gain a deeper understanding of human behavior and cognition, thereby proposing more humane and more realistic solutions of urban governance.

He also emphasized that the future development of scientific research would be directed toward the extensive use of application scenarios. He highlighted that postgraduate students should actively explore the feasibility of interdisciplinary approaches when conducting academic exploration, bridging knowledge gaps between disciplines. Prof. Han encouraged students to enjoy academic freedom at the University, which, in return, would stimulate new ideas and knowledge, allowing academic research to bring more love and beauty to society.
Zhou Long, associate dean of Graduate School, concluded that this lecture not only provided a valuable communication platform for postgraduate students, but also gave them a deeper understanding of the topic. He hoped that students can apply the key takeaways to actual learning and research, thereby contributing more effectively to academic development.
