To help students and faculty to have a deeper understanding of the content of the Macao Basic Law and to deepen their understanding of the rule of law, SAO and the Macao SAR Government Legal Affairs Bureau jointly held a special lecture at the Ho Yin Conference Centre in the Taipa campus yesterday. The event invited Prof. Wang Yu from the Faculty of Law of the University of Macau and a member of the Macao Special Administrative Region Basic Law Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress as the speaker. The lecture, titled “Constitution: The Best Textbook for Patriotism”, focused on patriotism and the Basic Law, analyzing the connection between patriotism education and the implementation of the Constitution and Basic Law, and pointed out the shortcomings and practices for strengthening patriotism education. Pro-Rector of CityU, Chan Chon Pat, and 100 students and faculty representatives attended the lecture.

Prof. Wang Yu has stated that Macao has a deep historical tradition and social foundation for patriotism. He further emphasized that the effective implementation of patriotic education and the governance of Macao by patriots were crucial aspects and fundamental ethical requirements of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

In his concluding remarks, Pro-Rector Chan Chon Pat expressed that the university had organized a series of legal education activities in the past two months to enhance students’ understanding of the Constitution and the Basic Law. He emphasized that this lecture aimed to inspire students to become ambassadors of the “One Country, Two Systems.”

As the legal foundation of the Macao SAR, the Basic Law plays a crucial role in the development and stability of Macao. This lecture helped students gain a deeper understanding of the content of the Macao Basic Law and enhance their awareness of the rule of law.

To strengthen constitutional awareness in society, promote the spirit of the Constitution, enhance its implementation, and comprehensively advance the rule of law, December 4th has been designated as the Constitution Day in China. The Constitution is the fundamental law of the country, and understanding it is not only about understanding the national system but also about understanding one’s own rights and obligations and fulfilling corresponding social responsibilities. It is expected that through this activity, students will integrate constitutional knowledge into their daily learning and life, become law-abiding and active citizens, and contribute to the harmony and stability of society.
