CityU PhD students visit local media to explore Macao’s role as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries
The Institute for Research on Portuguese-Speaking Countries (IROPC) at the City University of Macau (CityU) led a group of doctoral students to visit Macau Business Media yesterday (8) to advance their knowledge of the concept of Macao as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries and its role in the context of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. IROPC Associate Dean, Prof. Francisco Leandro, and academic members accompanied the group to the media headquarter.
The media director Mr. Jose Carlos Matias gave an overview of the company, such as its business model and multimedia transformation. He elaborated on how the media outlet enhanced Macao’s connection with Lusophone countries. Furthermore, he discussed the local press’s sustainability and prospects.
Mr. Jose Carlos Matias pointed out, “Macao’s special positioning contributes a great part to China's diplomacy in terms of soft power and the implementation of national strategic development plans for the Belt and Road Initiative, Greater Bay Area, and the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.” He spoke highly of the SAR government’s efforts and results in fostering people-to-people and cultural ties with Lusophone countries. “Macao’s economic diversification and integration into national plans are key for its future development,” he said.
Mr. Jose Carlos Matias provided constructive insights on writing and collecting information during the answer-and-question session.
This field visit was one of four major visits to local communities and businesses: (1) Banco Nacional Ultramarino; (2) C&C Lawyers & Notaries; (3) Macau Business Media; (4) Macau Military Club. Prof. Francisco Leandro said that “The visits organized by IROPC in the academic year 2022/2023 aim to strengthen the relation between students and the local community from the perspective of Portuguese-speaking countries studies, especially on economic, trade and cultural exchanges.”
