CityU, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Diagnosis and Treatment for Thoracic Tumor sign cooperation agreement to tackle medical challenges

In his speech, Zhou Wanlei, vice rector of CityU and dean of the Faculty of Data Science, regarded Shandong as a hub for medical big data and noted that smart healthcare was a key application scenario for CityU’s AI research and training. He stated that the FDS faculty team included over ten outstanding AI experts specializing in smart healthcare, highlighting the aim to achieve breakthroughs in AI algorithms through collaboration that drew on the advanced clinical experiences of Qianfoshan Hospital. Vice Rector Zhou mentioned that these initiatives would jointly advance the development of smart healthcare in both Shandong and Macao, marking a significant milestone.
Xing Lumin, executive deputy director of the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Diagnosis and Treatment for Thoracic Tumor, viewed this cooperation was of milestone significance, mentioning that it would lead to three major breakthroughs in the field of smart healthcare:
- A cross-domain heterogeneous medical data governance system to address the long-standing challenge of data silos;
- An AI-assisted diagnosis standard system that would be mutually recognized between Shandong and Macao, setting a benchmark for the standardized AI application in healthcare;
- A cross-border collaborative innovation ecosystem between Shandong and Macao, focusing on the “clinical needs-technical breakthroughs-industrial transformation” cycle.
Xing mentioned that the future project would focus on the demonstration application of AI-aided diagnostic technologies in basic clinics to benefit over a million patients in five years, especially by enhancing the early screening rate and diagnostic accuracy of major diseases, thereby driving the development of “Healthy Shandong”.

CityU has a solid collaboration foundation with Shandong Province, having established long-term partnerships with institutions such as the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University and Qilu University of Technology. Both sides share a high level of agreement on the understanding and importance of data science, particularly medical data. This cooperation builds on the previous research foundation with the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Diagnosis and Treatment for Thoracic Tumor. The two parties, together with the Shandong Computer Science Center, have formed a joint innovation team based on data, computing power, and algorithms, establishing a digital innovation system to promote the development of digital diagnosis and treatment in Shandong Province. Going forward, joint laboratories will be established in both Macao and Jinan. CityU will send experts and scholars to local hospitals to work with medical staff on the development of the digital diagnosis and treatment system to implement relevant projects.
