Recently, the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Cooperation between CityU and the United Nations University Institute on Computing and Society (UNU-CS) was held on the Taipa Campus of CityU. Professor Michael L. Best, director of UNU-CS, researcher Mamello Thinyane, Rector Shu Guang Zhang at CityU, Professor George Du and Professor Cai Zhiming at the Institute of Data Science attended the signing ceremony. Professor Michael L. Best, Professor Haizhou Li at the National University of Singapore and Professor Huang Bo at the Chinese University of Hong Kong were also invited to give wonderful lectures to teachers and students present at the ceremony.

In response to the vigorous development of big data in today's society, CityU and UNU-CS hoped to jointly promote the development and exchange of data science and computer science, and broaden the prospect of cooperation through the signing of this Memorandum of Cooperation.

Professor Michael L. Best, Director of UNU-CS, shared a little with attendees about the background of UNU-CS. UNU-CS, a research institute under the UNU system, was established in 2015 to replace the United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST) established in 1991. UNU-CS aims to serve as a bridge between the United Nations and the international academic and public policy community to help the United Nations fulfill its policy goals and train the next generation of interdisciplinary scientists, including computer science, social science and international development. Professor Michael L. Best also discussed with participants and students in the field of data science the sustainable development goals of the United Nations being studied by the UNU-CS, including good health and well-being, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, and so on.

Professor Haizhou Li at the National University of Singapore and Professor Huang Bo at the Chinese University of Hong Kong have conducted in-depth discussions with teachers and students on the two topics of artificial intelligence speech information processing and how big data can help information fusion. The attendees raised many questions on relevant issues from the three guests.
