According to the undergraduate curriculum, students will have the opportunities to participate in internship programmes outside the campus in the same field of study during the summer break after completing foundation studies in year 3. Undergraduate student Gong Tao took a two-month summer internship at the Guangzhou branch of the China United Creative Design Co Ltd – a leading service provider of survey, design solutions, and consultancy, where he gained more profound insights into environmental design. Under the leadership of his colleagues, he was able to engage in various design projects, including the landscape and pond design in Hejiang Village of Foshan, the community and visitor centre in Hongwei district of Foshan and the Dabu Community Stage of Dongguan.
Gong said his colleagues helped him refine the designs and the preview models due to his lack of experience using design software. After the assistance of his colleagues and continuous practice, he could complete various tasks on his own towards the end of the internship. Although the training was challenging, Gong said it helped enhance his professional expertise and further his understanding of the industry. He said he has set the goals for his future studies and made up his decisions on the graduation project.

Assistant Professor Lee Meng Shun, internship and project coordinator, said FIAD will continue strengthening exchanges to achieve a promising outcome in talent cultivation and mutually beneficial industry-academia collaboration.
Architect Xie Lingfeng said the company had signed an agreement in 2021 with FIAD to provide tailor-made internships outside Macao, such as urban landscape and environment design. In addition, the architect said interns will be involved in real-life projects depending on their capabilities to develop their professional skills and garner a better understanding of corporate design projects.
The Faculty of Innovation and Design of the City University of Macau places great importance on the professional development of its undergraduate students. Through the development of the market-driven curriculum and the partnership with enterprises, CityU is working with the industry to nurture the design professionals that serve the Greater Bay Area and steer a better future for the sector.
