CityU students win 2 gold, 3 silver, and 8 bronze awards at China International College Students’ Innovation Competition

Congratulations

The national finals of the China International College Students' Innovation Competition (2025) were recently held at Zhengzhou University. City University of Macau (CityU) achieved its best-ever performance in its history, with two projects—"Zero-Touch Diagnosis and Treatment” and “HeartVision: Cardiac Imaging Recognition and Segmentation System”— winning gold awards in the higher education main track. Additionally, three entries received silver awards, and eight entries received bronze awards.A total of 4,720 projects advanced to the national finals, competing across five categories: the higher education main track, the “youth red dream journey” track, the vocational education track, the industry track, and the emerging track.
This year’s competition was jointly organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with 10 other departments and the Henan Provincial People’s Government, with Zhengzhou University and the Zhengzhou Municipal People’s Government serving as co-hosts.Since its launch in April this year, the competition has attracted 6.19 million projects from 24.43 million participants across 5,673 universities in 161 countries and regions worldwide.

The competition featured three key highlights:

  • Focuses on national strategic priorities: In addition to the “four new fields” (new engineering, new medicine, new agriculture, and new liberal arts) and “AI+” themes in the higher education main track, five new categories were introduced—low-altitude economy, biotechnology, quantum technology, new energy, and new materials—guiding young students to engage in innovation in key fields.
  • A global perspective: For the first time, the competition has hosted seven regional contests in Europe, Africa, and other areas, achieving full coverage of the world’s top 100 universities and fostering exchanges among students.
  • Greater emphasis: Future transformation/commercialization of student projects into practical outcomes.
Before departing for the competition in Zhengzhou, CityU's Vice Chairman of the University Council Ung Choi Kun, Pro-Rector Robert Chan Chon Pat, and Head of Student Affairs Office Lewis Chao Chan Chong, met with the project teams. They gained insights into their project development and competition preparation, encouraging them to strive for honors and achieve new successes. The University representatives affirmed that the institution would support the future implementation and transformation of the project outcomes, providing opportunities for industry-academia collaboration.Vice Chairman Ung Choi Kun presented the students with a Chinese calligraph reading “Persevere and Strive”, encouraging them to stay true to their original aspirations and continue striving for progress.

Gold Award Project Introduction

Zero-Touch Diagnosis and Treatment

This project addresses the growing demand for medical testing automation by leveraging core technologies including AI machine vision and multi-degree-of-freedom automated control to achieve fully automated blood collection. So far, the project has obtained 25 authorized patents and represents the world's only fully automated blood collection robot that has passed Class III medical device approval, with blood vessel recognition rates exceeding other benchmarking projects by over 10%.Clinical trials have demonstrated that the system surpassed manual procedures in blood collection success rates, pain control, and user satisfaction. Its non-vacuum collection technology greatly reduces errors. Furthermore, the project operates a nearly 1,000-square-meter R&D base and an 8,000-square-meter facility to support its production. It has been deployed in hospital HIS systems to provide comprehensive services.

Validated through clinical institutions including Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, the project has received support from the “14th Five-Year Plan” for medical equipment planning. It maintains collaborative potential with multiple universities, driving the development of smart healthcare while demonstrating significant industrial advantages.

HeartVision: Cardiac Imaging Recognition and Segmentation System

Facing the practical challenges in cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment, particularly the  suboptimal segmentation in cardiac angiography analysis, the project innovatively proposes LASF (Local Adaptive Segmentation Framework for Coronary Angiography Sequences). This framework is not merely a single algorithm but a comprehensive end-to-end technical pathway, providing a systematic innovative solution to industry-wide challenges.
