CityU students win Gold, Silver, and 3 Bronzes at China International College Students’ Innovation Competition
Student teams from the City University of Macau (CityU) achieved outstanding results at the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition 2023 (CICISIC) and won the National Gold, Silver, and three Bronze Awards in the grand finals. The final event was hosted at the Tianjin University.
With innovative mindsets and professional practices of the students, the project “Non-Invasive Dynamic Lung Function Monitor” has won the National Gold Award, the “Removable-Modular-Sharing Green Office (RMS Green Office)” has won the National Silver Award, and the “Leisure Time after Tea – A Venue for Young Drama Performances,” the “Dreaming Vast Seas, Macao’s Exploring at Ease – A Study Tour Project to Experience the Ocean Culture,” and the “Warm Heart Housing – Matching between Urban Elderly and Young People” have each won the National Bronze Award.

The team that won the gold award was composed of student Adelaide Liu Haining from the Faculty of Finance at CityU, along with two students from other universities. Under the guidance of Chief Scientist, He Wei from the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) and Macao’s young scholar Tan Liang, she led the team throughout the competition and ultimately won the National Gold Award. Lung disease has become the number one systemic disease in China, but there is currently a lack of means for real-time dynamic monitoring of lung function. Existing medical lung function testing instruments suffer from inconveniences in use, long examination cycles, and the inability to dynamically monitor. The project team has developed a new type of lung function testing product – a non-invasive dynamic lung function monitor, which solves the shortcomings of traditional lung function testing instruments. The product is dedicated to achieving precise and real-time monitoring of the lungs in the ICU, ensuring the safety of critically ill patients.
The team that won the silver award was composed of nine CityU students, including Tao Hanming, Wu Ruiyan, Jiang Yueyue, Huang Zhengxi, and Tang Mingcong from the Faculty of International Tourism and Management (FITM), Zhang Boyi and Zhang Xinyu from the Faculty of Business (FOB), and Wen Ziqing and Ye Muxi from the Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD). Under the guidance of FITM’s Professor Jacky Li Xi, as well as FOB’s Associate Professor Ge Mei and Assistant Professor Zuo Peixin, the team proposed the “Removable-Modular-Sharing Green Office (RMS Green Office).” The project utilizes recycled urban building waste and creates modular mobile spaces to provide low-pressure remote office and shared spaces for digital nomads in this new era. This project is dedicated to solving the increasingly severe problem of waste and garbage in cities, promoting sustainable development of the environment, and through urban-rural connectivity, easing the pressure faced by urban workers in their lives and work, driving the development of rural tourism and aiding in rural revitalization. The project team actively worked with rural villages and obtained letters of intent for cooperation from local authorities, as well as a letter of recommendation from Dr. Hao Yulong, executive deputy general manager of the Star River Group. The project also received initial fundings of millions of yuan from relevant investment companies. In the future, the “Removable-Modular-Sharing Green Office (RMS Green Office)” will continue to deepen its efforts in sustainable development, and through collaborations in various fields, contribute to solving social issues such as environmental protection and sustainable development.
The team behind the bronze award project “Leisure Time After Tea – A Venue for Young Drama Performances” from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) was composed of three students, including He Zihan, Wang Lang, and Hu Shushan, and was guided by Assistant Professor Shi Ruiting. The project’s company, Leisure Time After Tea Culture Limited, is dedicated to promoting arts and theatrical culture, adhering to the concept of integrating tradition and modernity, and combining technology and drama to create a venue for both education and performances. It aims to develop youthful theatrical entertainment, bringing new and modern theatrical works to audiences who love theatrical performances, while also serving as an incubation platform and promoting employment opportunities for the industry to attract and cultivate new generations of talented performers.
The team behind the bronze award project “Dreaming Vast Seas, Macao’s Exploring at Ease – A Study Tour Project to Experience the Ocean Culture” was composed of students from FHSS, including Wang Lang, He Zihan, Hu Shushan, Ma Wanqi and Jiang Binghang from FOB. They were guided by Professor Wang Zhong and Associate Professor Xiao Daibo. Based on the rich tourism resources in Macao and following the policy guidelines of the Ministry of Education’s policy guidelines for practical learning activities for students in compulsory education, this project takes ocean culture as the starting point and youth research trips as the main activity. Through learning and experiential journeys, participants can immerse themselves in the diverse history and cultural heritage of Macao, enhancing their understanding of the city and promoting exchanges between mainland and Macao youth. Through practical learning activities, this project aims to promote Macao's cultural heritage and urban resources, while also contributing to the development of Macao’s positioning as “One Center, One Platform, One Base.”
The team behind the bronze award project “Warm Heart Housing – Matching between Urban Elderly and Young People” consists of five students from FOB, including Xie Wenqing, Zong Jiayang, Xu Yujun, Hou Jinyang, and Zou Yanjie. They were guided by Assistant Professor Lu Yitian. This product is an online platform/software that focuses on big data and targets young people from other cities such as Beijing and Shanghai who are living and working in first or second-tier cities, as well as empty-nest or single elderly people over 60 years old in the local area. It provides personalized living services by accurately matching roommates based on their lifestyle needs.

The predecessor of the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition (CICISIC) was the China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. It is one of the most well-known and widely participated competitions in the country, covering the most categories of projects. The competition also includes international projects and has received high attention from the country. The evaluation results of the competition have gradually become an important indicator for evaluating the quality of university innovation and entrepreneurship education and instructors. This year’s competition lasted for seven months and attracted over 4.21 million projects from 5,296 colleges and universities in 151 countries and regions, with a total of 17.09 million participants.
