More than 300 new students joined City University of Macau (CityU)’s “Welcome Walkers” city exploration activity, designed to help them settle into campus life while getting to know Macao. In teams, they set out to explore this coastal city and everyday bustle sits alongside natural beauty. The outing gave them a lively start to their university journey.

The immersive field visit linked some of Macao’s best-known cultural landmarks with neighborhoods full of local character. In small teams, students explored both the old streets and newer parts of the city. Their route took them from the Ruins of St. Paul’s to the bustling St. Lawrence Municipal Market Complex, past the Macao Grand Prix Museum and on to Lotus Square. Along the way, they heard stories about the streets, admired architecture from different eras and experienced Macao’s distinctive blend of Chinese and Western influences. As students laughed and explored together, the initial awkwardness faded and new friendships began to form.

The itinerary also introduced students to Macao’s food culture. At long-established neighborhood shops, they sampled local favorites such as crispy Portuguese egg tarts and juicy pork chop buns. The snacks sparked conversations about their hopes for university life and their first impressions of Macao, adding to the warmth and camaraderie of the day.

The city exploration came to a close, but a new chapter in university life was just beginning. Students not only learned more about Macao and its diverse culture, but also shared in the energy of the group and began to feel more at home on campus. We hope they will carry that same enthusiasm into their studies, pursue their dreams and continue to grow at CityU.
Reflection

Student Wu Chenyu, Faculty of Business
Through the “Welcome Walkers” activity, I experienced Macao’s diverse culture and local customs, met senior students from different places, and picked up practical tips for studying and living at CityU. I also broadened my social circle. Macao has a unique charm: it is rich in history yet international and modern. From the weathered Ruins of St. Paul’s and Kiang Wu Hospital, which carries memories of the revolution, to the Lotus Flower in Full Bloom sculpture, the city’s landmarks tell stories of its past and present. I met more classmates and learned about Macao’s history and local life. The experience has made me even more excited about my time at CityU.

As an exchange student, I was delighted to join this event at the start of the academic year. It offered me a wonderful chance to discover Macau and connect with fellow students.
We went on a city tour and dined at a local restaurant, sampling traditional cuisine. The genuine experience allowed us to immerse ourselves in local vibes and culture. Later, we enjoyed recreational activities at the beach. The water‑balloon game was particularly thrilling, enabling us to interact and converse with many local students.
In the evening, we gathered for a tasty barbecue. We chatted and laughed, savouring the laid‑back time spent with one another. I greatly value this participation. The event nicely brought together social networking, leisure and cultural exposure. It served as a fantastic start to my exchange semester and helped me gain better insight into Macau’s local culture.

First of all, I would like to thank the organising team for their thoughtful arrangements. The event turned out to be more enjoyable and memorable than I anticipated. We visited several well‑known attractions in Macau, tried local delicacies, and got to meet many engaging fellow students.
The beach barbecue, alongside the fantastic student performances including singing, dancing and karaoke, made the evening particularly unforgettable. It was an enjoyable and rewarding chance to make new friends, and I would highly recommend other students to take part if given the opportunity.
