CityU’s CNAF-funded project “Revisiting Splendor: Macao Imagery Creative” Achievement Exhibition opens today

The “Revisiting Splendor: ‘Macao Imagery’ Creative Achievement Exhibition”, a 2025 China National Arts Fund (CNAF)-supported creative project developed by the Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD), City University of Macau (CityU), opened today at the exhibition hall on the 2nd floor of the Convention & Entertainment Centre of the Macao Tower. Centered on the theme of “Macao Imagery”, the exhibition draws upon the city’s “mountain-sea” layout, historical context, urban fabric, and contemporary life, presenting the diverse aspects of Macao as a city where East meets West, through various art forms.

The event was attended by: Ho Hong Pan, head of the Department for Promoting Cultural and Creative Industries of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR; Chan Lai Kei, ; and CityU Rector Jun Liu. Representatives from universities, cultural and arts institutions, professional parties, industrial organizations and the media agencies were also present to jointly witness the opening of the exhibition.
In his speech, Rector Jun Liu stated that the “Revisiting Splendor” is themed around Macao, rooted in its historical heritage and modern development, and showcases the city’s spirit and cultural values through various art forms. He noted that FIAD has been awarded a China National Arts Fund (CNAF) project, reflecting CityU’s strengths in art, design education, and cultural research, and its commitment to national and regional cultural development. He hoped the exhibition would foster greater artistic exchange and cooperation between Macao and mainland China.

According to Prof. Po-Hsun Wang, project leader and executive associate dean of FIAD, the exhibition moves beyond surface-level depictions of scenery to reframe the city's urban character and cultural essence. He discussed the creative process, noting that inspiration was drawn from the “mountain-sea” layout, cultural memory, and contemporary life, shaping Macao’s cultural image from multiple angles. The project, he explained, aimed to leave behind both the artworks and a lasting platform for artistic exchange between Macao and the Chinese mainland.

In his speech, artist representative Liu Yingwu noted that Macao has a rich cultural landscape, nestled between mountains and sea as an East-meets-West city. Liu explained that the creative design followed the "mountain-sea-city" concept, presenting the city's noble spirit, openness, evolution, and cultural memories. He said the exhibition aims to showcase Macao's spirit and vitality over time, and that hosting it at the Macau Tower gives visitors a broader view of the city’s splendor.

After the speeches, guests officiated at the ribbon-cutting ceremony and toured the exhibition, engaging in discussion on the themes of the works, creative methods, contemporary expression of Macao cultural symbols, and the artistic transformation of urban imagery. The artworks presented Macao’s natural landscapes, historical memories, urban scenes, and humanistic spirit from various perspectives, allowing visitors to reveal the cultural depth and urban charm of Macao through the viewing experience.
This achievement exhibition is sponsored by CNAF, the Public Welfare Lottery Fund, and the Cultural Development Fund of the Macao SAR. Taking artistic creation as its entry point, the exhibition puts together urban research, cultural memory and visual expression, offering a new approach for Macao cultural symbols’ contemporary interpretation and public dissemination. Going ahead, FIAD will continue to promote the integrated development of artistic creation, design research, and cultural heritage, contributing to Macao cultural and artistic endeavors as well as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area cultural development.

The exhibition is to be held from May 26, 2026 (Tuesday) to June 2, 2026 (Tuesday) on the 2nd floor, Macao Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre. All are welcome to visit.
