CityU’s sci-tech projects present at first Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao University Science and Technology Achievements Investment and Trading Conference
The First Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao University Science and Technology Achievements as successfully held today in Zhuhai. Vice Rector Ip Kuai Peng led a delegation that included Zhu Tianqing, associate dean of the Faculty of Data Science, Prof. Sun Xin, João Simões, director of the “Belt and Road” Portuguese-Speaking Countries Information and National Conditions Research Center, and Zhou Long, associate dean of the Graduate School. They showcased multiple cutting-edge research achievements from CityU and participated in the judging panel in project evaluations, helping to bridge communication for technological innovation and industry collaboration among universities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

The in-depth integration of industry, academia, and research in the GBA is a vital practice in response to the national initiative for developing new quality productive forces. It is also a key component of Macao’s “1+4” moderate diversification strategy. The government encourages universities, research institutions, and enterprises to share innovative resources and complement each other’s strengths. This is based on principles of collaborative research and development, shared benefits, and mutual risk-bearing, aiming to strengthen joint talent cultivation, advance technological innovation, and promote the translation of research outcomes.
Guided by the three-dimensional mechanism of the “national innovation-driven strategy—industry-academia collaborative policy—regional industry demand”, the First Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao University Science and Technology Achievements successfully opened. It established a specialized collaborative innovation platform for displaying technological achievements and facilitating industry-academia connections, becoming an important practical vehicle for implementing regional innovation mechanisms and promoting the transformation of university research outcomes.

Associate Dean Zhu Tianqing introduced several projects from CityU, highlighting the malicious flow detection project utilizing large language model (LLM). She pointed out that this project incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) and LLM technology to address the challenges posed by new multi-stage attacks that traditional network intrusion detection systems struggle to handle, aiming to automatically generate monitoring and filtering rules for malicious flow and integrate these into the full lifecycle of network security defense, thereby building a reliable intelligent network intrusion detection system. Associate Dean Zhu also emphasized active talent recruitment of the University in recent years, resulting a team focused on artificial intelligence and big data security and thereby empowering the university’s development.
Director João Simões stated that the Institute for Research on Portuguese-Speaking Countries (IPROC) at CityU serves as a bilingual talent hub. He emphasized the role of a super connector for the China and the Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs) by building bridges for sci-tech cooperation, facilitating projects from countries such as Brazil, Portugal, and Timor-Leste with the industrial and capital chains of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Director Simões highlighted that these efforts would accelerate the flow of innovative elements within the GBA, promoting the city cluster to develop into a global innovation ecosystem.
Associate Dean Zhou Long emphasized CityU’s commitment to creating an open and diverse research environment for postgraduate students, aiming to stimulate their innovative thinking. He stated that university supports interdisciplinary research by integrating university and industry resources and co-establishing joint laboratories, thereby serving industrial needs while cultivating innovative talents.

The conference was attended by officials from Zhuhai and scholars from Hong Kong and Macao universities, including: Chen Yong, part secretary of the Zhuhai Municipal; Huang Zhenqiu, vice mayor of Zhuhai; Yin Xiaobo, associate vice-president of the University of Hong Kong; Wei Wei, deputy party secretary of Beijing Normal University (BNU) and party secretary of BNU Zhuhai; and Claudia Xu Jian, vice rector of the University of Macau.
