Congratulations! CityU scholar receives second prize in the Ministry of Education Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award

Professor Wang Xiaoyang, from the Faculty of Innovation and Design at City University of Macau (CityU) received a second prize in the Monograph and Research Paper category for his monograph, A Study on the Chronological Historiographical System of Chinese Religious Art Archaeology (Science Press, 2024), in the Tenth Ministry of Education Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences). Adding another remarkable achievement to our humanities and social sciences field. The results of this award were recently announced.

The Ministry of Education Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences) is the highest-level, most authoritative and most comprehensive award in philosophy and social sciences in China, showcasing original and leading research achievements across the nationwide universities. This award marked the first time that CityU art discipline has received this national academic honor, and also the first time that an art discipline in Macao has won a second prize in this award.

With more than 500,000 Chinese characters, the monograph systematically examines the development of Chinese religious art archaeology. Based on publicly available archaeological reports published between 1949 and 2019, the study comprehensively reviews more than seven decades of archaeological materials and compiles, for the first time: the Chronological Table of Archaeological Reports on Chinese Religious Art and the Chronological Table of Research Reviews on Chinese Religious Art Archaeology, filling a gap in the field.
At the theoretical research level, the study covered several key areas, including construction of a complete chronological historiographical system, periodization of academic history, design of attention indicators, exploration of maritime archaeology, and cultural heritage protection, presenting a comprehensive framework and in-depth investigation.
This monograph is a periodic achievement of the major national project The Multi-volume History of Chinese Religious Art and also constitutes the concluding result of the key national project A Study on the Chronological Historiographical System of Chinese Religious Art Archaeology. The project received an “excellent” rating and was selected into the National Philosophical and Social Sciences Achievements Library.
Professor Wang Xiaoyang received the second prize at the 9th iteration of the same award for his monograph, Studies on the History of Chinese Tomb Murals. Winning the second prize of this prestigious award in two consecutive terms, demonstrates Professor Wang’s solid and profound academic track record, as well as the high recognition from the academic community in the national humanities and social sciences fields.
