Congratulations! CityU student’s music work wins two awards in Fujian Quyi Dangui Award competition

Recently, Huang Jing, a doctoral student in arts studies (musicology) at the Faculty of Innovation and Design of City University of Macau (CityU) and a provincial-level representative inheritor of “Banggu Dong”, co-created a music work titled “The Song of Cicadas and the Summer Solstice” and won first prize of the program award and second prize of the screenwriting award at the 7th Fujian Quyi Fangui Award Competition. The co-creator of the work is the sixth-generation inheritor Wang Chengrous. “Banggu Dong” is a traditional performing art form in Fujian Province and is one of the items listed in the fifth batch of intangible cultural heritage program.

This competition was organized by the Fujian Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Fujian Provincial Department of Education, and was hosted by the Fujian Quyi Artists Association.

Huang has long been committed to traditional song performance and cross-cultural dialogue under the guidance of supervisor Dai Dingcheng, who offers both Chinese and Western academic perspectives. The competition entry, “The Song of Cicadas and the Summer Solstice”, based on traditional “Banggu Dong” in Putian, blends the imagery of civilizational mutual learning, such as the Mulan River and the Nile River, using cicada chirp as a metaphor for youth growth and cultural inheritance.

This composition preserves the traditional musical characteristics of Banggu Dong, while conveying childlike expressions and a cross-cultural perspective, showcasing the new vitality of local intangible cultural heritage genres in children’s folk art creation. With the assistance and the rehearsal of the art team from Putian No.1 High School, the work stood out among 70 national finalists and earned high recognition from the jury.

This award not only demonstrates the vitality of Banggu Dong in contemporary children’s song creation but also reflects CityU’s achievement in cultivating cross-cultural artistic talent and promoting the creative transformation and innovation development of China’s traditional cultural. Looking forward, CityU will continue to advance the inheritance and innovation of Chinese traditional culture, promoting the contemporary expression of local intangible cultural heritage.
