Congratulations! CityU students’ research travel case recognized at World Research Travel Conference 2024, selected in Case Studies Compendium
Students Yan Pei and Yan Yutao from the Faculty of International Tourism and Management (FITM) at CityU, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Meng Ting, completed the proposal titled “Exploring Ecological Rationale Promoting Harmonious Coexistence Creating a Better Home – 2025 Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao Junior In-depth Nature and Humanities Travelogue.” This proposal, distinguished by its unique thematic focus, scientifically designed curriculum, and sustainable social value, received high praise from the evaluation panelists of the World Research Travel Organization (WRTO). It stood out among over a thousand global submissions and was successfully selected in the WRTO Case Studies Compendium. The proposal is set to be published in print, serving as a representative achievement of innovative research travel practices among domestic universities. Its inclusion not only demonstrates the solid professionalism and innovation of CityU students but also serves as an example contributed by the collective wisdom of the youth for the development of research travels in China.

This project proposal suggests visiting three inclusive and open coastal cities that blend Chinese and Western cultures: Hong Kong, the Pearl of the Orient; Macao, the Lotus Land; and Zhuhai, the City of Hundred Islands. The participants will experience exotic sceneries and immerse themselves in the local daily life. In the trip, which encompasses urban humanities, natural science, and fun activities, efforts will be made to educate participants to respect nature and cultivate love for life. By exploring the animal world, the participants can enhance their knowledge about animals. Through face-to-face interaction, they can further enhance their understanding of wild animals, stray animals, and other animal-related knowledge, unlock the mysteries of ecology, understand the animal protection declarations, and develop a loving heart for animals. The participants can see what they’ve learned from the textbooks in real-life nature, explore and protect biodiversity, and develop a sense of awe and love for nature, thereby building a better ecological environment together.
The year of 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia and the 11th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership. The Belt and Road Initiative will further emphasize high-quality development. Through research travel, people-to-people and cultural exchanges will be strengthened, enhancing mutual understanding between the people from the two sides, especially among teenagers. The friendship that has been passed down for thousands of years will be further advanced, promoting greater development of bilateral relations over the next 50 years and benefiting the people of both countries.
The World Research Travel Conference 2024 has set a guest of honor country for the first time, and it is China. This conference was a key event for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. The conference aims to promote the continuous expansion of exchanges and cooperation between Malaysia and China in fields such as tourism, education, culture, youth, and marine ecology. At the same time, it aims to promote a shared system of international tourist sources for research travel among Southeast Asian countries, Malaysia, and China, contributing to the high-quality development of the global tourism industry.

FITM is dedicated to implementing an educational model that integrates industry and education, as well as knowledge and practice. In recent years, the faculty has been closely focusing on emerging fields such as research travel. It has launched master lectures, including “Analysis of Research Travel Cases” and “Planning of Research Travel Bases and Project Design.” Additionally, FITM has jointly initiated the Research Travel Project Planning Competition.
Moreover, the faculty actively engaged students in visiting research travel bases to explore industry trends, thereby providing students with comprehensive support spanning from theory to practical application. The successful inclusion of this project proposal demonstrates the outstanding achievements incubated by students of CityU in university-enterprise collaborative projects.
