Eight Expectations from Rector Jun Liu, Undergraduates Encouraged to Aim Higher

The 2020/2021 Congregation of the City University of Macau was held at the Cultural Centre on its Taipa campus at 10 this morning.  There were over 1800 CityU graduates this year, over 800 were undergraduates, over 700 were Master’s Degree students and nearly 300 were PhD students. The two-day congregation was held both on site and online.  It was also broadcast live to provide a cloud platform for graduates, families and friends who were unable to attend the congregation to watch it.  The campus was full of joys and vibrancy as graduates shared their happiness with teachers, families and friends.

During his speech, Rector Jun Liu talked about his eight expectations and encouraged graduates to continue with learning and keep striving to be better. His expectations are: first, to be grateful to parents for raising and educating them, be grateful to teachers for teaching them and giving them guidance, be grateful to the alma mater for nurturing them; second, do not be arrogant, understand one’s shortcomings and improve on them through learning continuously; third, learn from those who are wiser and more experienced, be humble and “draw on the strengths of others to overcome one’s shortcomings”, fourth, keep studying hard to develop their thinking and not be afraid of trying, apply what they have learnt in practice; fifth, enhance multi-cultural social skills and the ability to communicate in English, sixth, actively participate in international study and exchange, accumulate experience of studying abroad, seventh, be good at thinking, develop their analytical and problem solving ability, eighth, further their study and get a higher degree.

Chen Jiaqiang, graduate from the Faculty of International Tourism and Management, was excited during his speech.  He thanked the alma mater for nurturing him and thanked dedicated teachers for offering him help whenever he needs it.  He also thanked fellow students for being his companions as he studied and grew up. He loved CityU not only because of the strong learning atmosphere but also because CityU gave him a sense of belonging as his “home”.

The graduates this year are from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Innovation and Design, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Finance, Faculty of International Tourism and Management, School of Education, School of Law, Institute for Research on Portuguese-speaking Countries and Institute of Data Science.

The graduates make the prettiest scenery of the University. Their youthfulness blossoms like flowers in the Summer, expelling the Summer heat and invigorating the campus, giving the beautiful CityU glowing vibrancy.  Leaving means reunion in the future and waiting means a promising future to come. Time flies but we can forever keep the dreams we have shared and treasure the youthful days that are most unforgettable. Be courageous and set off in confidence! Regardless where we go an regardless how far we are, we will never forget the wonderful times we spent at CityU.
