International AI Expert, Distinguished Prof. Zhang Chengqi gives master lecture on Impact of ChatGPT
Continuing the festive atmosphere of the 42nd anniversary celebrations of City University of Macau (CityU), Distinguished Prof. Zhang Chengqi, an international expert in artificial intelligence and Pro Vice-Chancellor (China Enterprise) at University of Technology Sydney (UTS), gave the Master Lecture at the Cultural Centre, Taipa campus, today (March 29th) to discuss the impact of ChatGPT on artificial intelligence research and social development. The event was attended by students, faculty, government representatives, guests, University leaders, and Council members. They included Mr. Ung Choi Kun and Mr. Yan Zexian, Vice-Chairmen of the University Council.

Distinguished Prof. Zhang began his lecture by introducing the poems generated by ChatGPT and research studies in the field of AI to present a brief history of artificial intelligence. “ChatGPT has opened up a new path for artificial intelligence research. As a powerful AI tool, it can provide strong assistance to society, liberate labor and improve work quality. However, ChatGPT also has its downsides. Sometimes it generates incorrect answers for questions or logic that have definite correct answers,” he continued, “Therefore, using ChatGPT requires understanding how to avoid harm and maximize its potential to generate semi-finished products or find inspiration. In error-sensitive areas, it should be used with caution to maximize its potential and ensure its positive influences on human life and work.”
“The emergence of ChatGPT is not a just fleeting success but a leap in cognitive science and a revolutionary change that will affect every individual,” Prof. Zhang commented in his conclusion.
At the end of the lecture, there was a Q&A session. Rector Jun Liu pointed out that the higher education sector emphasizes academic norms and requires students to think independently. Plagiarism was strictly prohibited when writing papers. He asked Professor Zhang how to balance the use of ChatGPT with academic norms. Prof. Zhang explained, “ChatGPT is only an auxiliary tool and should not replace human work. Students should develop their own abilities. At the same time, the education sector should reform the teaching model. It should not only impart knowledge to students but also focus on improving their abilities and cultivating their creative thinking.” Prof. Zhang also answered questions raised by the students. The auditorium was filled with cheers and applause.
