The 2021 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) announced its results a few days ago. Two teams from our school participated in the contest, one of which earned an Honorable Mention, ranking among the only two prize-winners in Macau. The team consisted of Tang Binglin from the Faculty of International Tourism and Management, Zheng Jiansong from the Institute of Analytical Psychology, and Xu Zhibin from the Faculty of International Tourism and Management.
The team applied the research methods and ideas taught in the course “Research Methods” by Professor Shen Heyong from the Institute of Analytical Psychology, Course Director Gao Bo of the Faculty of International Tourism and Management, and Assistant Professor Wang Yiwen of the Institute of Analytical Psychology, into establishing a highly abstract mathematical model with humanistic thoughts. Based on the VIIRS 375m and MODIS C6 sensor data provided by NASA, the paper performs Poisson Distribution Fitting to model a grid based on actual terrain. By randomly generating several operating centers and drones, it uses the Monte Carlo simulation method to find the balance between efficiency and economy of fire detection by drones. The paper also designs a route planning algorithm and provides suggestions for ecological protection and sustainable development of social economy.
MCM/ICM is the only international mathematical contest in modeling sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Application, and the most influential mathematical contest in modeling around the world. MCM/ICM lays stress on problem research, original solutions, teamwork, communication, and rational results. Consisting of three persons, a participating team needs to complete all the tasks from model building, solution finding and verification to English paper writing on the designated problem within 4 days. This year, a total of 26,112 teams participated in the contest, an increase of 6,990 teams from last year. Participants came from 1,641 schools in 22 countries around the world, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.
Over the past 40 years since its establishment, City University of Macau (CityU) has been developing featured disciplines of data, new engineering and social sciences. In the context of the integrated development of higher education in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, CityU has kept abreast of the times, and cultivated applied and practical professionals in great demand in Macau and the Bay Area. The interdisciplinary and inter-faculty spirit of exchange and cooperation demonstrated in this contest reflects the continuous improvement and advancement of CityU and its students.
