The final contest of City Cup English Public Speaking Competition 2018 took place on 25th April 2018 in HG-03 with a successful ending. Organized by the Foreign Language Education and Research Center (FLERC), the City Cup English Public-Speaking Competition, is the first English Public Speaking Competition ever organized in City University of Macau. It aims at promoting the use of English on campus and cultivating potential talents in the field of English public-speaking. Around 50 students from different faculties enrolled for the contest, and 9 outstanding contestants entered the final after the preliminary selection conducted by the English teachers of FLERC on 11th April 2018. There were two rounds in the final, in the first of which the finalists gave a prepared speech on the given topic of the competition (‘Is technology a curse or a blessing’), and in the second an impromptu speech on an unseen topic. All the nine finalists gave impressive speeches, and they explored different issues in the second part of the final contest. The competition encouraged the students not only to polish their English language skills but also to understand more about the world they are in. After the discussion of the judges (Prof. Hu Bo, Prof. Ivo Carneiro de Sousa and Mr. Raymond Liou Wain Fu), the Champion is Steward, 1st Runner-Up and 2nd Runner-Up are Chris and Rainbow respectively. The speaker with the Best Manner is Anson, while the most Humorous Speaker is Vito. The guests of honour, including Vice Rector Prof. Kong Fanqing, Registrar Li Shuying, Associate Dean of Faculty of Humanties and Social Sciences Prof. Zhong Wang and Director of Student Affairs Office Ms. Zhou Pinqiu, awarded the contestants, leading to the end of the competition. Under the care of the University, the Foreign Language Education and Research Center (FLERC) looks forward to better contests with more exciting new topics in the coming future and providing students with more opportunities for speaking foreign languages. |
