In response to this year’s International Museum Day, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has organised a large-scale annual museum event “2017 Macao International Museum Day Carnival” with the theme“The Mobile Museum – Red Market X Drunken Dragon Festival”. Our teachers and students from Faculty of Urban Management and Studies (FUMS) were invited to take part in the Red Market Mobile Stall Design. The opening ceremony of the event and the showcase took place on 3 May. Vice Rector Kong Fanqing contemplated and praised the work by our teachers and students. Meanwhile, she also represented the university to receive souvenirs presented by the curator of Macau Science Center. The exhibition as well as the masterpieces by our design students were well-received. With the advancement of urban planning in Macau and increasing attention for environmental hygiene, the redesign and standardisation for hawker’s stall are inevitable. Thus, under the support of Macau Science Center, a series of model were created for the hawkers at Red Market. The aim of the project is to enhance the environment of the community and turn the mobile stalls into a subject for research. The teachers and students at FUMS have spent three months working on market research, user analysis, plan development, design finalisation and moulding. It is believed that students can put what they learnt into practice and enhance the quality of learning. With the ethos of serving Macau through design in this practical project, the teachers and students at FUMS have increased their interaction with the society. They solved social problems of the city through design and brought about innovation in the sustainability of Macau with the citizens as the object to serve, user’s behaviour as the foundation, and the objects and environment of Macau as the medium.
