Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei attends the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area A.I. Industry Conference to discuss the risks and responses to A.I. applications

The 2024 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area A.I. Industry Conference, guided by Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province and hosted by Guangdong Association of Artificial Intelligence Industry, opened yesterday in Nansha, Guangzhou. Zhou Wanlei, vice rector of City University of Macau (CityU), dean of Faculty of Data Science, vice president of the Association for Promotion of Science and Technology of Macau, was invited to attend the establishment ceremony of “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao (Nansha) Artificial Intelligence Industry Empowerment and Innovation Center”, and participated in the roundtable forum “Accelerating General AI to Empower Industries” to conduct in-depth discussions on topics with experts and scholars from academia and industry.

During the forum, Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei expressed his views on the network risks brought about by the current applications of AI. He noted that data security was the primary threat posed by AI applications since AI required the collection and processing of vast amounts of data; and if data involving personal information was leaked or misused, the consequences could be disastrous. Furthermore, he mentioned that cybersecurity vulnerabilities could not be ignored, and the complexity of AI systems might attract hacker attacks, leading to network paralysis, data loss, and other severe consequences. Additionally, Vice Rector stated that AI could be used for cyber fraud and malicious attacks, such as deceiving users with intelligently generated false information or launching phishing attacks using AI technology.

Although the cyber risks caused by AI applications are unavoidable, Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei also pointed out that strengthening supervision and taking protective measures were the key in facing many cyber threats. He recommended that government departments and industries improve relevant laws and regulations to improve data protection awareness and technical level, strengthen network security detection and emergency response capabilities, so that artificial intelligence can better serve mankind.

During the interactive session, Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei carefully answered questions from audience about CityU’s postgraduate programs in the field of AI and the impact of AI on future vocational education.

With the theme of “Building the Foundation for General AI to Empower Industries,” this conference aimed to build a high-end communication platform integrating government, industry, academia, research, and commerce, promoting the implementation and transformation of AI scientific and technological achievements, accelerating the empowerment of industries with AI, and enhancing the high-quality development of the general artificial intelligence industry in Guangdong Province.
